Butler's b h Laertes, aged, 6st . . 0 Templeton, Chancellor, Norseman, King Quail, Magnolia, Soukar, and Balmoral also ran. Pinfire, Sinking Fund, York, Libeller, and Vampire were scratched. I Betting: 7 to 2 against Foul Play and Lara, 5 to 1 against Templeton, 100 to 15 against Laertes and Hippocampus, 100 to 6 against Hailstorm, 100 to 4 against King Quail and Magnolia. This was the event of the day, and proved to be one of the prettiest races ever run on the course. It was generally expected that a number of the horses would run very close all through, but the result far exceeded all anticipations. At about 3 o'clock the horses were got together near the hill, and after a short bolt by Hailstorm, sent away, Hailstorm at once assuming a position about a clear length ahead of the rest, , Balmoral last. Coming out of the furze I Lara had a good second place, but quickly j gave it up to Chancellor, King Quail also I passing him. The position was kept p»s---i Bing the stand and to the far side of the course, the horses being so close together that there was never a gap between them, although they were sufficiently stretched out to have . the appearance of ruuning two and two ' together. Norseman was bringing up the ' rear, Templeton, Laertes, Hippocampus, and Foul Play in the centre, and Lara third, j King Quail and Chancellor having dropped to tbe rear. At tbe river Lara, who had been held back till then made a rush, and came up to Hailstorm, and a shout went up that he was winning. At the turn, however, another candidate for first honors appeared in Foul Play, who was not going to be denied. He came along near the rails with a grand rush, and took first place, winning by a length and a-half, Lara second, and Hailstorm, on his quarters, third. Hippocampus stood forth, and Laertes fifth, the rest being pretty close together. Time, 3 min 37sec. The course being in good condition, most of the horses ran without shots, and several of these, notably Lara, was very , lame after the performance.
