FURTHER PARTICULARS.
The house, which was known as Lincoln Cottage, and is situated between Union and St David-streets, was occupied by a family named Hayes, consisting of the father, mother, son and daughter. It appears that one of tbe sons who has been in the employ of Mr R. T. Wheeler of this city has been suffering from ill health, and that this so preyed on his mind that he became insane, and had to be confined in a lunatic asylum. This" in turn is supposed . to have preyed on the . mind of the father, ,a well to do contractor. He came^iome apparently all right last night, but this morning, on waking, he proceeded .to cut his wife's throat with a table knife, and after succeeding in this attempt, he made for the children with the jntent'ion of murdering thern also, but they ran out into the garden, whither he followed them, and succeeded in inflicting , some wounds on the son. Not succeeding in catching either of them, however, he returned to the house. At this stage a neighbor . named James Gilks, a greengrocer, was attracted by the screams of the children, and, throwing down a bundle he was carrviEJj, he rushed into the house, and i^Ssund , Hayes in the act of cutting ■at. This he . prevented $knife from him, laying ? attend to Mrs Hayes l the roomj but while thus tgain seized the knife and vering his windpipe before Wilts observed that he had again got hold of the ' knife. It appears that there was a ' lodger in the house, and that Hayes when coming in from the garden) after attempting to catch his son and daughter made an attempt to murder him also. The boy, who is not severely injured, ia about 12, while the girl js much older. The son who is at present in, the Lunatic Asylum is 22 years old. The eldest son is at Oamaru. The Tipperary Company have crushed 659 ounces from 580 tons of stone. Wellington, Saturday. j Young Scott, the pedestrian, commenced his walk of 112 miles in 24 hours at 10 last, night. He is in splendid trim, and shows that he has been carefully trained. About 2000 persons had paid for admission to the ihall up to 9 o'clock this morning. The course ;is 23 lapß to a mile. Scott walked exceedingly well, covering 28 miles in 3 (?) hours 45 minutes. He retired for breakfast at 9 o'clock, when he had 43 miles to his credit. Scott'a friends are confident that he will accomplish the distance. Up to one o'clock Scott had walked 71 miles. The steamer Kangaroo, with the new cable !for Cook's Strait, has just arrived, and : operations will begin in three days. i Christchubch, Saturday, i In to-day's papers, two grain buying firms advertise three ships to take wheat on freight to London and other ports o£ the United Kingdom during the present season The Canterbury Jlifle Association will hold a prize firing meeting on February 18, in order to give the men practice before, going to Nelson. The man Jamea Wilson, reported as having fallen from the 11.15 train to Lyttelton on Thursday night, is recovering. The heel and sole of one of his boots had been ripped off, apparently by the flange of the wheel, ■ showing what a remarkably narrow escape he had. Friday. A whale 24ft long was driven ashore at . Sumner last night by a swordfish. It had • several wounds on the body. | . : A shark, measuring 13ft long and 2ft 6in in girth, was caught by some fishermen this morning in Pigeon Bay. His sharkship got entangled in the nets and drowned himself. The fishermen missed their nets during the night, and after grappling for them for some hours, found that the shark was completely rolled up in the nets in his endeavor to get free. The head is 3ft long and mouth 13in across from tooth to tooth. There are 24 teeth in the lower jaw and 20 in the upper. The side fins measure 2ft Sin, and the tail 3ft 4in from point to point. It required six men to haul the carcase into the boat. Normanbt, Saturday. The Hon. the Native Minister and Col. Roberts left here yesterday for New Plymouth and the north to inspect the Constabulary stations on this coast. The contract for metalling three sections of the Waimate Road was let to Daniel Hughes of Kakaramea, who has prospected for gravel and found a supply sufficient for all purposes within a quarter of a mile of the road near Waingongoro. The gravel is said to be' of fine quality and the most extensive gravel pit yet found on the coast. The formation of the road towards Kapokono is being vigorously pushed forward by the Constabulary. There ' is nothing new at the camp at Kaipipi. Auckland, Friday night. A lively scene took place to-night at St. James' Church. Last week a resolution was carried that dancing and rinking be allowed in the Sunday School Hall. Tonight a fresh meeting was convened, the anti-dancing and rinking fraternity mustered in force, and after a warm debate reversed the former decision.
