[Pkess Association.] WELLINGTON RACES. Wellington, Thursday. There are abont 3000 oq the course, ana an exceedingly large number of vehicles and horsemen. The road from the railway station is lined with conveyances of all descriptions carrying passengers to the races, and clouds of dust are passing over the course. His Excellency and Lady Robinson and suite arrived at 1220, and three cheers were given when they stepped from the carriage. All games of chance, comprising the Wheel of Fortune, &c, have been stopped by the police. The totalisators are but poorly patronised. Maiden Plate: Talent, 1- Rore, 2; Pourere 3. Tour Btarted. Betting, 5 to 2 on Rore. Hurdle Race : Kangaroo 1, Tamatea 2 Four started. Won after a splendid race by a length, Te Whetu fell. Betting, even on Lone Hand. Wellington Cdp: Hon W. Robinson's Foul Play, 1; Lara, 2, Hailstorm, 3 Hawera, Thursday. ■ Mr Bryce arrived yesterday evening. The Constabulary have finished their work east of the camp, and are now working to the westward. Titoko Waru is reported to have gone to Parihaka. He must have some important reason for the visit, as there is no meeting called, and the fact of his going now, after an absence of some months, is pregnant with significance. Donedin, Thursday. Samuel Willis came by his death very suddenly at the Rose, Thistle and Shamrock Hotel in Great King-street last night. He had a glass of wine at the bar and went upstairs to his bedroom where some time afterWards be waa found lying on the floor lifeless.
The cause of death is not yet known. J The t>uncan Saleyards Company have declared a dividend of ten per cent. The Otago Agricultural Society have appointed a Committee to show the Lincolnshire delegates round. New Pltmodth, Thursday. The Wellington arrived early this morning, and sailed for Nelson and southern ports at 10 30 a.m. Passengers for south : Miss Watkins, Miss Richmond, Mrs Taite, Master Watkins, Messrs South, Johue, Watson, and Short. Mr Syme of Melbourne, Mr Bennett of the Sydney News, and Mr Brett of the Auckland Star are passengers by the steamer for Wellington. CHBiSTCiinRCH, Thursday. The total receipts at the late Amalgamated Benefit Societies' fete amounted to £363, leaving a credit balance, after paying prises and all expenses, of £98. This will be divided pro rata amongst the Lodges taking part in the fete, on the- basis of Is 2d per member. Sub-Inspector O'Donnell, of Clyde, succeeds Inspector Hickson ot Christchurch. At the recent r examination of the Canterbury schools by the Government Inspector, the following instances of phonetic spelling occurred in a.dictation lesson :— "lzizon" for "Is his own," and " Fosf rus " for " Phosphorus " ■For the Great Autumn Handicap, the entries are fire less this year than last. The Odd Fellows Hall was crammed to excess last night to hear Chiniquy's third lecture. The Rev. Mr Smalley, the Chairman, in introducing him said that in spite of lyiDg priests and lying editors Chiniquy continued to be regarded as one of the noblest men living. The lecturer, in the course of the evening, referring to the Boxing Day riot, advised the audience not to conceal their colors, and to go into the streets with them about their shoulders, as, if they were notfreetodosoitwould.be better to die than be slaves to the Pope. He lectures three nights more next week. At the quarterly meeting last evening of the Liberal Reform Association, a resolution was carried on the motion of Mr S. P. Andr ews M.H.R., that it be recommended to the Hoj., the Minister for Lands that it is desirable to afford as much assistance as possible to. the Co-operative Land Labor „ Company towards settlement on the lands of the colony.
