[Press Association.] Wellington, Wednesday. The tail of what appeared to be an enormous comet was visible here last night. It was also seen at Blenheim, Castlepoint, and Kekerangu. The Supreme Court this morning refused to grant a new trial in the libel action of Anderson o.Kirkbride. In the case Cleave v. King leave was given to appeal to the Privy Council. : The gates of the race course have been bought by Mr Ames, of the Star Hotel, for £240. Dunedin, Tuesday night. Mr J. L. Butterworth died suddenly this morning.. Mrs Halliwell. is appointed governess of the Girls' High, School. The appointment of an English master is still undecided. There are upwards of 90 applications, principally from Australia. A Company is announced with £25,000 capital to work the Wallsend colliery, at Greymouth. The Chamber of Commerce Committee passed the following resolution: — " That the Committee does not feel justified with the information at present at its'disposal in opposing tbe abolition of the Invercargill express train, but is of opinion that the train substituted should, if possible, be accelerated, so that it might reach Invercargill earlier ia

That the deputation wait on Ministers on their return to town with a view to. discussing the proposed changes as far as they affect the commercial interests of Invercargill, Dunedin, and Christchurch. A fatal accident occurred at Outram on Saturday, by which a bullock driver who was known only by the name of " Sam " was killed. He aud another were driving teams together along the road, when deceased's team was noticed to be without its driver, who, upon being looked for by the other man, was found lying on the road some distance behind, dead. It is supposed that in attempting to put the brake on he fell off the dray, and the wheel passed over his neck. Mr Fulton, M.H.R. for Taieri, addressed his constituents at Mosgiel last night. He was accorded a good hearing, and at the conclusion of the address received an unanimous rote of confidence. Christchurch, Wednesday. Nominations for the Great Autumn Handicap will close at eight o'clock to-night. The Oddfellows'' Hall was, again crowded last night on the occasion of Pastor Chiniqu'y's secoud lecture. The Rev. C. Dallestou, who occupied the chair, said that Chiniquy's work entitled him to be remembered as a reformer, side by side with Martin, Luther, Calvin, and John Knox. ' A man named John Stewart, in the employ of Mr. Coup, timber merchant, was found yesterday hanging by the neck dead in a whare'at Taitapu. The deceased had tied the rope to a piece. of scantiing in the roof, mounted a for" m and then knocked it away. ; He had been driuking heavily of late. A steam hammer weighing 23,8001bs was landed yesterday from the American barque Ada Wiswell for the railway workshops. The Academy of Music has been leased by Mr r H. Debourbel and will be opened on Easter Monday by a strong. Dramatic Company. ; . The tail of a comet was distinctly risible to the naked eye last night soon after sunset. The tail was a little to the south of west, and peached from the "horizon almoßt perpendicularly to a distance of about thirty degree's!. , The Lincolnshire! delegates 'went all over the Rakaia and Methven districts on Monday and yesterday, accompanied by several of the priocipal residents. In addition to a drag and four used for a part of tlie journey y the Rakaia' and Ashburton Forks train was placed at their desposal. . '-, Normanbt,' Tuesday night. The camp at Kaipapi was visited yesterday by a large number of visitors from Hawera and^Normanby. -The Constabulary, who finished forming the. road. to. Gnaha on Friday, and commenced working on the portion between Kaipapi and Kaipokonui on Saturday, were to-day sent to Onaha to form the road between that stream and Waingorigoro. It is reported amongst the natives that two 1 Europeans visited their Rainga yesterday and insulted one of their women. The Europeans were recognised as civilians. Westport, Tuesday night. Charles Libree, alias Yankee Charlie, well known in connection withthe.Costello murder case, died in the hospital last night after a long illness. A man named Neil McLean was brought down from the Inangabua Junction last night with a serious wound in the head ' inflicted by a man named Stewart. Jealousy in connection with McLean's wife is supposed to be the cause of the assault. The woman was living with Stewart for 20 years before she married McLean some two years ago. A constable is after Stewart. Hawera, Tuesday night. It is expected that it will take a week to complete the formation of the road between Onaha and Waingongoro. The Constabulary will then start at Koupuni, and form the road towards Kaupokanui. The Native Minister is expected here to morrow. No natives are allowed inside the camp at Kaipipi, but they are permitted to bring commodities for sale, and a sentry la placed to keep them from intruding inside the line, such precaution being necessary, but nothing is done to wantonly hurt the feelings of the natives, who consider themselves the owners of the soil. New Plymouth, Wednesday. Two somewhat serious accidents happened at the harbor works yesterday. A man on one of the tramway trucks was thrown violently to the ground through its being started before the signal was given, and at 4 SO, two men were working underneath a rock that had been fractured by a dynamite charge when a large piece of it fell down, and, but for its being elevated at one end by catching on aprojection, it would have crushed the men. It however, rolled over on one man hitting him on the back. The injury, although not fatal, is very severe. Wanganui, Wednesday. District Race: Otawa, Opawa, Banshee, Flora M'Donald, Astronomer, Curiosity, , Petruchio, Leta, Amateur. A pedestrian named Neary, a bootmaker, attempted to walk 50 miles in ten hours. A course of 80 yards was marked out in the Drill Shed and he walked in splendid style and covered 49 miles and 160 yards.
