LOCAL COMMITTEES OF EDUCATION.

. STOKIS. A well attended meeting of the householders of the district was held at the school room on Monday evening the 2Cth to hear the report of the retiring Cornmitee and to elect a uew Committee for the present year.Mr W. Rout was called to the Chair, who redd the following report : — ln accordance with requirements of the Education Act 1877, the retiring Committee present an account of their stewardship for tfae pa9t year/ The addition to schoolroom referred to in last year's report, has been erected, now forming two handsome well proportioned class rooms, giving ample space to the children and better accommodation to the teachers, besides allowing for the probable increase in the number of scholars. The old schoo'rooni has been provided with a large ventilator to carry off the foul air, which was formerly so oppressive when the children were assembled. The roof has abo been furnished with spouting to prevent tbe rainwater from destroying: the foundation of the building. The water is now collected from the spouting in large tanks, and is found very useful for drinking purposes. Both schoolrooms have been thoroughly cleaned during the Christmas holidays, and the outside and inside walls of the old room colored and repaired. New outbuildings have also been erected and some trees planted to act as screens, the further planting of the school-ground with suitable trees is intended to be proceeded with during the next season. The Committee wish to record their high esteem for the teachers, and particularly value the care and attention devoted to the children by. the head matter (Mr Naylor), who appears to spare no trouble in making the school-course both instructive and pleasing to his. pupils. The Treasurer (Mr W. D, Cress well) has prepared, fc statement of receipts and expenditure by the Committee for the past year, which he will now submit to you. ' „ •-% The late ' Treasurer submitted his accounts audited by Messrs H. Hyde and Charles Ching, of which the meeting approved. The election of the new Committee then took place and resulted as follows :— W. Bout 17, W. Doidge.l6, A. Harley 15, J. Paynter 15, "W. D. Cresswell 13, C. Ching 12, T. Churaall 9, F. Norgate 7, E. Cresswell 7. The first seven were declared duly elected, and the meeting terminated. HOPE. The householders met at the Hope school on Monday evening, Mr Thorburn in the Chair. The meeting was not so well attended as it might have been in consequence of the wet weather, aud also the meeting having been advertised to be at the Hope school instead of Ranzau, as formerly. Tbe following householders were then nominated : — Messrs Kearna. Malcolm, Max, W. Jessop, J. R. Hooper, W Lines, H. Lankow, and B. Primmer. A ballot being taken the following was the result :— Messrs Kearns, Malcolm, Max, W. Jeasop, J. R. Hooper, W. Lines and H. Lankow.
