The Nelson Evening Mail. MONDAY, JANUARY 12, 1880.
A confirmation was held at All Saints' Church last night, when the sacred rite waa administered by the Bishop of Nelson to forty-three candidates. The San Francisco mail arrived at Auckland in the R.M.S. Australia last night, tbree days in advance of its due date. The southern portion was transferred to the Wellington, which left Onehuuga at 10.30 this morning, but we learn from a telegram received by the Postmaster that she is to proceed from New Plymouth to Wellington direct, whero the. Nelson, Marlborough, and West Coast mails will lie until Wednesday, when they will be sent across in the Wellington. A sale of work and Chistmas Tree were held- on Wednesday last ,in the, school ground, Ngatimoti, in aid of the erection of a Church of England building; In the evening the schoolroom was crowded to hear the Rev J. Leighton's lecture on the Indian Mutiny. .The audience listened attentively, and the thanks of ali present were tendered to the rev gentleman by Mr Tarrant, J.P., who presided. The takings of the day amounted to £18 10s. The following special London telegrams of the Bth and 9th instant appear in the Post : — In the event of the private efforts now being made to relieve the distress in Ireland heing fonnd in inadequate, the Government have announced that "they will at the commencement of next session, ask Parliament to grant a sum of £2,250,000 from the surplus funds remaining from the disestablished Irish Church, for the purpose ot enabling relief works to be established, so as to alleviate tbe prevailing destitution. — Disturbances continue to take place in consequence of notices of eviction being served wholesale on tenants who declineto pay their rent. Rival processions are got up in opposition to the bodies of men employed to serve the notices, and collisions frequently -occur. — Determined 'opposi* tion has been manifested by the Turkish inhabitants of Gusinie and the surrounding country against the cession of the .district to Montenegro, as provided by the Treaty of Berlin. The Hospodar of Montenegro, Nicholas 1., accordingly proceeded to occupy {
the disputed territory by force of arms. A I most desperate resistance was offered by the inhabitants, and severe bloodshed. has taken place in consequence. Heavy fighting is still going ohj and there are a large number of killed and wounded on both sides. — A great deal of disaffection continues to be manifested by the' Boers, and the Transvaal is still in a very unsettled condition. Some couriers bearing despatches for the Government were recently stopped near Pretoria, and their despatches taken from them by a party of rebels. , Several of fche lajtcr have been arrested.
