EDUCATION BOARD.

Parker, for £305 eaoh, ifc was resolved, Thafc they- be. authorised to oomplete fche works for the sum abovenamed. . , ' Resolved, That tenders be invited for bailding teacher's house afc Riwaka, on. the. same plan as that prepared by Mr John. Soofcfc for the teacher's hours at Bichmond. The Inspector's Report for 1879 was laid before the Board, and ordered to be printed as soon as the - quarterly returns from the West Coast, still in' arrear, are forthcoming. The Report of the Board of Examiners, recommending fche appointment} of Mrs Hansen as miafcresß of Charleston Girls' School, and the provisional appointment of Miss Laura Snow as teacher of Rockville, was adopted by the Board. The Secretary was instructed to communicate with the school committees interested. The Inspector's Report on the establishment of a new sohool at Nine Mile Beach having been considered, it was resolved, That a subsidy be offered to the memorialists on the usual conditions. Resolved,. Thafc fresh tenders be invited for builda schodlhouse at Collingwood, Parker Bros, having declined entering into a contract in accordance with the terms of their tender. j Resolved, That a<? the time has arrived when the j offices of Inspector and Secretary oan no longer be combined, a Secretary at a salary of £350 per annum i he advertised for, applications to be received until i February _th. A memorial requesting the Board to constitute the ! Lyell a School District having been considered, the Inspector was instructed to report on the matter after his return from fche West Coast. An application for a new sohoolhouse afc fche Karamea was similarly dealt with. Resolved, Thafc the Reefton Committee be allowed £25 to defray the cost of painting tank .and completion of outbuildings j and that, tbe Reefton Committee allowance be increased by £20. The Inspector was instructed ori his next visit to Reefton to report on a building, the purchase of . which waa recommended by the Reefton Committee, with a view to its accommodating the .increased number of children now attending Black's Point School. The Secretary waa also directed to inform fche Committee that as no money is afc present available for new buildings, the suggestion in the Inspector's report that the older children should for a time go to Reefton School, ought to be adopted. Mr Ledger having resigned the teaohership of Pakawau School, it was. resolved, That a mistress be advertised for at a salary of £72 per, annum with £12 rent allowance. . < ' ' A letter was read from the Minister of Education, informing the Board that no . new District High School would be authorised until the report of the Royal Commission on Secondary Education had been received. Resolved, ThatA-nristress for Toi-toi Girls' School be advertised for, who shall be competent to carry pupils through Standard VI, as prescribed by regulations ; the salary to be £200 per annum without head money. The Spring Grove Committee having applied for an increase of the salary of the master of Spring Grove School, the Secretary was instructed to reply that the Board will take the matter into consideration at an early date. The Seoretary was instructed to inform the Committee of Stanley Brook Sohool that a subsidy would be granted to them on the usual terms when they had appointed a teacher. Resolved, That a master for Collingwood School be advertised for, Mr Canavan having resigned. A letter was received from the Native Commissioner agreeing to give fche Board a twenty-one years' lease of three acrea of No. 200, Lower Moutere, as a school site. Seven tenders for building the schoolhouse afc Richmond having been considered, the lowest, that of Mr Walter Good, for £308, waß accepted. Six tenders were received for building the schoolhouse afc Fox Hill. The lowest, thafc of Mr J. Webley, for £235, wos accepted. Resolved, That £100 bo allowed for the purchase of a sohool site afc Richmond, the £50 formerly voted having been found insufficient. Resolved, Thafc fche Hope Committee be allowed a sum of .£BO, to be expended by them in adding to tbe teacher's house. The Seoretary was instructed to write to the master of tho North Division Waimea West school, reminding him of tho resolution of the Board, requiring teachers to reside iv the houses provided for them by the Board ; and further insisting that this regulation be complied with afc once. Tho Inspector having directed the Board's attention to the great waste of books and school material hitherto supplied gratuitously, and to the extravagant applications of many of the teachers for books, it was resolved, That copy books be supplied gratuitously, but tbat henceforth all other books be sold to the scholars afc cost price. Resolved, That Messrs Campbell, Rout, and the Bishop of Nelson, with the Secretary, confer with Mr John Scott as to the plan of the new-school in Haven road, and that they further bo empowered to advertise for levelling the site and building the school.
