To the Editor of the " Evening Mail.'' Sir— ln your report of the New Year's Day sports, there is contained- a sentence that would lead one to suppose that there had been- some " sham and deception " in the prizes olsered for competition, because they were called silver instead of silver plated. Thiß may have been a clerical error on the part of the Mariag^jent Committee, but on their behalf I repudiate .any statement that there has been any tning savouring of " sham and deception " connected with the value of the prizes. The* sports held on New Year's Day, 1879, was our precedent, xand on that occasion we offered in, some instances money prizes, aud in other trophies. Those who had won the money prizes -with small exception had them exchanged for trophies, and not of solid silver ; from that we naturally thought to please competitor a, that we should offer articles that would be useful as well as ornamantal, which we did, and in many instances added money. The whole of the trophy, prizes were open for inspection^^Mr Hounsell's, for fourteen days previouJ|raMftusports, and intending ctfmpetitoraga|iM|^^liherty to 'judge for themselv|^H||WJ^^^"" f - the prizes were ir nrt h^j|jH|||||||B^^ror. aud I- have every reasa^™i|M^Pßat the winners were well sat||iSraH|S%pni'. lam sure that it is the wilreoilllßSMJub to please everybody (a hard yßafflljrarappn'ill be glad to accept any sound fralfifSSßP^ from the public, knowing that MBpSgiP'he good wishes of every lover of SnSKnyWporfc, and I have no doubt that next l||gapprizes will be offered so that the win||||iP can either have money or the value in of their own selection. Regarding flFthe delay mentioned everything was ready jj on our part to start at the appointed time, but competitors not being ready we waited for them, and I think the public were better pleased than had we passed the event over.
