In our report of the New Year's Day proceedings yesterday we omitted to make mention of the most active of the promoters of the sports which afforded pleasure to so many.. Towards making all the necessary preparations none bad devoted so much time and trouble as Mr F. N, Jones, and to him in a very large degree is owing the of the gathering. We therefore take . the earliestiopportunity of rectifying an omission that was purely accidental, and for the occurrence of which we can but express our regret. * Wb are glad to be able to congratulate the Nelson Artillery Cadets upon the success they have achieved in Wellington, where, though they were beaten by the local Cadets at the carbine match, they were victorious in the gun. drill competition. We also bear that in the tug of war they were too strong for the .Wellington lads. The result of the great Champion race which was run at Melbourne on New Year's Day did not, owing to the strike in the Telegraph Department, reach us until too late for publication yesterday, but it appears in this evening's telegrams.
