Tpukss aoesov.l Christchurch, Friday. A disgraceful outrage occurred this morning. As the Protestant Alliance were proceeding to tbe railway to picnic at Prebbleton they were set upon by a number nf men who oame from Barrett's Borough Hotel armed with pick-handles. Notwithstanding the ex ertions of the police about ten of tbe Protestant Alliance were more or less injured one man in particular being dangerously "wounded. The police have captured four of the assailants. The greatest excitement nrevailed. * Saturday. Before a very full bench, Michael M'Avery, Thomas Hanley, Patrick Caddity, and Michael Connoly were charged with riotous behaviour and assaulting certain persons proceeding along the street, and were remanded till Monday, and bail refused. Several people were fined 60s and 40s for throwing stones at the Borough Hotel and One 20s for obstructing a special constable. Wellington, Frid.y night. At the Athletic sports contest between Wellington and Wanganui to day, a drizzling rain fell nearly all day, and the attendance was limited in consequence. Throwing the cricket ball; Burns (Wellington) beat Brown ! (Wanganui) with 95 yards s_m, being 2in over Brown. Tbe two mile walking match ! was won by Beswick, Lynch 2. Both are Wellington men.
