A Victorian carpetbagger thns discourses. His reasons for entering on political life are deliriously candid, and furnish anotherargumerit ngainst raising tho pay of members. By a happy inspiration I addressed myself to tbe electors; made vague premises of wb&t I would do for them should I ever get into power Sircp Ihen I have bppn a respectable member, living on my £300 a year and my free railway pass, and ever since looking forwari to turning up snnie day as a Minister, with my £1500 or £-.ono a year, or at all events in he «nd fa'iinp into some snug bprth as one <,f these l(»t\d commissionrrs at £1000 per annum. Aftrr all I eonld not have done much hotter in life, certainly not considering the liberty I rnjoy in regard to tbe when, the where, and the how much of my work."
