[>RKBB AOBNOT.] Alexandra, Tuesday. A native named Uohepa, a near relative of the Ngatimaniapoto chief Toanui, was struck by lightning on Saturday last while ridine between Oranui and Otiwa. He and his horse were killed instantaneously. Auckland, Tuesday. Mr Stewart, District Engineer,accompanies Ministers North. Sir G. Grey visits Maketu on his return in connection with the grand trunk railway. The Mayor elect gives a grand banquet to the Councillors on Wednesday. A very satisfactory trial of the fire escape sheet belonging to the Wangauui Fire Brigade was mads here at the Occidental Hotel and the Wellington Brigade intend to order one also, : i Mr Sheehan has obtained from the natives all the land necessary for the Hutt-Waikanae railway, the construction of which is to be commenced as Boon as possible. Arrived— Emerald, from Blind Bay Some time ago, a boy was seriously injured by a rocket fired from on board the Zealandia, and the captain was sued for damages. Mr Mansford, R.M , in giving judgment, said he thought the owner of the vessel ought to have been joined in the plaint, and had not Captain Sellars been about to leave the colony, he would have given a nonsuit on this point; but as be believed the rocket was fired by the first mate of the Zealandia, he would give judgment for the plaintiff for £50 damages. Defendant's counsel said he would appeal. Captain Roberts, of the Hermione, reports that typhoid fever made its first appearance on the 16th ult., since which two deaths occurred. Nine cases ore still under treatment, two being somewhat critical. The Hermione sailed from London on the 30th August The fever showed itself in several members of a family named Goose, of whom three are now ill, and spread to other passengers and crew, two of whom are still ill. It is supposed the passengers will be detained in quarantine a month or fire weeks. Tuesday. The Drapers and Clothers' Association arc raising and discussing the question of a half holiday during the week.— lt is eipected that railway extension to Masterton will be completed in eighteen months from the present time.— Mr Farnail, ex M.H.R , has received an appointment in the Annuities Office at Auckland.— The Maori arrested for having been in the bedroom of Mr Justice Gillies at the Criterion Hotel at Napier, and sentenced to a month's imprisonment for the intrusion has been released by the Minister of Justice. — Major Kemp and other chiefs are to visit Waikato. —Dr Hector has been up the Mokau river about five miles examining the coal seams which he reports to be three and five feet thick and quite accessible. The coal is considered the best yet found in the North Island. — Dr Hector is going through overland to Kuiti. Cubistchdkch, Monday. To-day is the 28th. anniversary of the settlement of the Province of Canterbury. It is glorious weather. The celebration commenced with a special service in the Cathedral to welcome the return of Bishop Harper from England. An address was presented to the Bishop, and there was a full choral service. There was a grand banquet 1 to the visiting members of the Volunteer Fire Brigades from Dunedin, Port Chalmers,. Waimate, Morningtoo, Kaiapoi, Timarn, Itaugiora.aud Lyttelton The anniversary gports at Harley were a great success, 14,000' people being on the ground. To-night there will be a torchlight procession, and grand pyrotechnic display. Bluff, Tuesday. The Ringarooma, Captain Clark, left Melbourne on the 11th inst, called at Hobarton which she left on the 13th, arrived at the Bluff at four this morning, after a fine weather passage. She sails at 4 p.m. for Donedin. ' >' The Board of Education are driven to an extreme course for want of funds. The Banks will not grant any overdraft unless guaranteed by the Government, consequently the creditors have been threatening to sue the Board, and the members meet to-morrow with the object of considering the advisability of resigning. The overdraft asked for is £4,000 to carry the Board through the I financial year, but the banks are unwilling to make advances, as money is long overdue by the Board.
