Delegates from the unemployed laborers hare forwarded a petition to the City Coundl stating that 200 men are idle, and asking fox work until the Government are prepared to prosecute some public works. The Her 8. Edger comes forward as the Champion ©i Mra Britten and has challenged
any ten men to meet him on a public platform and argue their views. A man named Doyle who was working at the reclamation works was killed instantaneously by a fall of earth from above the place where the men were engaged obtaining material for reclamation purposes. Ddnedin, Wednesday. The Jockey Clublast night appointed Messrs Jobberns and Dawse a Committee to revise all handicaps. Mr Fred Fulton, a prominent cricketer, broke his arm yesterday through colliding with another player at practice. Two totalizators were used al Iforbury yesterday. Through the accidental discharge of his companion's gun, W. Petrie while out pigeon shooting yesterday received the charge in his right elbow and side at a distance of seven yards. Wellington, Wednesday. The official enquiry into the accident to the Tui was held to-day. According to the evidence several of the crew were under the influence of liquor. The compass at the wheel, the captain said, was uurerdable. The captain took the wheel while tht men were setting the fore3ail, which they «eemed to have great difficulty in doing, so he left the wheel and went to the standard compass for a few seconds. The Court was in the opinion that the vessel grounded through proper judgment not being exercised by the master, particularly in having left his post on the bridge at a time when he could not see the light, merely to set the foresail, which was of no earthly use. Under the circumstances the captains certificate waa ordered to be suspended for three months, and the Court adjudged him to pay costs. F. J". Thomson, a respectable looking young man, was charged this morning on three separate charges of passing valueless cheques, and was committed for trial. Blenheim, Wednesday. Yesterday the boat abed belonging toHenrv Hopper was burnt down, a quantity of tools, pitch, oakum, and dressed timber being destroyed. It ia supposed that the ft: was caused by a live coal brought in under a glue pot. It was insured in the National for £100. New Plymouth, Wednesday. A strong feeling exists here against the Government handing over 5000 acres of the public estate to the Titanic Steel Company, and a resolution was passed at a public meeting last night to urge the Government and House, before complying with the demands of the Company, to ascertain whether the provisions of the M Taranaki Iron Smelting Act, 1874," have been honestly complied with. Doubts were expressed as to whether the Company ever had the actual capital required by section 6 really available for the purposes to promote which the grant was promised.
