The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1879.

Those who are in the habit of availing themselves of the parcel post for the transmission of patterns, samples, or other small articles, should bear in mind that nnder a regulation newly issued, the dimensions of such parcels have been limited to eight in length, four in width, aud two in depth, and the weight to eight ounces. If these are exceeded, postmasters are instructed to refnse to receive them. The Weileyan Church district meeting resumed its sittings yesterday at 3 p.m., when the question of taking up new stations in the district was further considered, but it was ultimately resolved that for the present at least no new ground should be occupied. The state of the Sunday Schools and the number of teachers and children attending them passed uuder review, and the report submitted was of a highly satisfactory nature. On the question being asked as to what recommendations were to be offered with respect to the training of candidates for the ministry, a report was read from a committee in Auckland recommending the estab'isnmeut of a connectioual high school, and after a long conversation on the subject, it was postponed for consideration till the fallowing

day. This morning, (Thursday) the subject was again considered, and the following resolution was adopted, " That the Conference be requested to ta£e Into its bohaiderAtfco the desirability of affirming a fixed standard of literary and theological attainments, to which all students in training for the Ministry must attain before entering upon Circuit works." The written and oral examination of the Rev. S. ?. Garlickj and tlie review* of his boot: list occupied the remainder of the morning's sitting. A meeting of the Wakefield Recreation Society was held on Wednesday evening last at Mr Hurst's house, when it was ascertained that there was a credit balance in the hands of the Treasurer! amounting to £-2% *s fj. About £10 had to be paid away for refreshments used at the entertaiutuent and tea party on the I'rince of Wales' birthday, leavsome £15 to hand over to the Choral Society, and a reserve of £3 for contingencies, including the purchase of a present for the leader of the band . Auditors were appointed to eAartiitte the accoiirit3. The storm last night limited the attendance at the Horticultural Show to about a score, that number only venturing to brave the elements, which certainly did their best to keep people at home. The Committee; however, thinking it a pity that the public should be deprived of the opportunity of seeing the really beautiful show of cut flowers which grace the tables, have decided to throw open the Hall again to-night, when there will be music as usual, and it is to be honed that the weather will on this occasion prove more favorable. The annual meeting in connection with the Wesleyan Home Mission will be held in the Hardy-street Church to-morrow evening, when addresses will be delivered by several very able speakers who are now in Nelson attending the District Meeting. At a recent meeting of the Town Education Committee i f , was decided to give the schools a holiday on Monday next, and that the Christmas holidays should commence on the 19th December, and the schools re-open on the 19th January. The prizes will be distributed in the Provincial Hall by the Rev R. Bavin on the 19th proximo.
