The Hawkes Bay Engineers formed an encampment at Petene on the Prince of Wales' Birthday, and an alarm was sounded without warning soon after the men retired to their tents on Sunday night. They turned out (says the Hawkes Bay Herald) with more promptitude than clothing in some inatances. An eye-witness describes the scene to us as intensely amusing. A few were in full uniform, but the majority had one or more things missing. One could boast of but a single shoe, another's unmentionables bad only one leg thrust through them, and many were without jackets and caps. But tbe crowning joke was when a gallant volunteer emerged from bis tent without any outer garments whatever, but with lm belt buckled over his singlet. Not one bad left musket or belt behind, and this Bays much for the presence of mind of the men.
