CITY COUNCIL.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting wag held last night. Present: Cra Everett (in the chair), Levien, Traik, Little, and Johns. A telegram was read from the Mayor stating that, together with Messrs Adams and Pitt and other Nelson members, he had waited upon the Government with reference to the newlj reclaimed land on the Port road, and that the Minister for Public Works said that on receipt of a formal application from the Council the land would be handed over to the Corporation until required for railway purposes. — The Town Clerk was instructed to forward such an application. A letter was read from Mr Pitt enclosing copies of the Municipal Corporations Act Amendment Bill, which had been drawn up by the Government draughtsman after being discussed by several of the members of the House. — The members of the Finance Committee were appointed a Special Committee to discuss the Bill and communicate with Mr Pitt on the subject. A letter from Mr J. Rochfort complaining of the defective drainage in Manuka-street was referred to the Works Committee. A letter was received from Messrs Watters and O'Brien, complaining of the damage done to their property by turning the course of the Brook-street Btreet stream.— Referred to the City Surveyor for him to report to the Works Committee upon it. A letter from Mr E. Touet, complaining that he " was blocked up by weeds," was referred to the Works Committee. A letter was read from Captain Bunny, on bebalf of the Volunteers, asking that they might be allowed to form a range across a portion of Collingwood-street which is under water at high tide— The Town Clerk was instructed to reply that the Council would offer no oppositiou so far as the encroachment on the Btreet was concerned, but declined to accept any responsibility, and reserved the right to stop the firing at any time. — Cr Little voted against this. A letter was read from the Secretary to the Hospital Committee, enclosing a statement of the receipts and expenditure of that institution for the quarter ending 30th Sept., 1879. It was as follows : — Receipts— From patients, £17 7s ; Government Subsidy, £300; Borough Subsidy, £150 ; Counties Subsidy, £ 87 10s ; Interest on deposit to credit of Convelescent Fund, £1 10s ; Credit Bal lance Convalescent Fund, £85 19s 10d ; total, £742 6s lOd. Expenditure— Salaries, £168 3s 4d ; Rations, £120 10s 6d ; Repairs and Furniture, £6 12s ; Medicines and Medical Comfort, £33 1 7s 5d ; Bedding and Clothing. £5 11s Id ; Burial Charges, £3 1 7s 6d ; Fuel aud Lighting, £65 16s 7d ; Incidental Expenses, £15 13s Id ; Payment from Convalescent Fund, £3 9s ; Credit balance at Bank, £234 15s 6d ; and Credit Balance to Convalescent Fund, £84 03 lOd ; total, £742 69 lOd. The assets were credit balances, aa stated above, £'234 15s 6d and £84 Os lod ; amount due from Government, £37 10s ; and furniture and appliances, estimated at £1200; total, £1556 6s 4d. The average number of indoor patients for the quarter was 15, and of < ut-door patients 82 ; and the average daily cost of each, including out-door patients, was 5s Bd. The following recommendations of the Works Committee were adopted:— That the ditch in front of Mr Organ's house in St. Vincent-street be cleared out; that the footpath in Hardy-street near Mr Campbell's corner be gravelled; that a lamp be erected in Hardy-street, midway between Col ling wood and Alton-streets; that notice boards be placed on the Church Hill, cautioning persona against injuring the trees and shrubs.
