Sbe arrived at Onebnnga this morning. The Wanganui arrived in harbor at 8.30 • a.m. yesterday. She left Dunedin at midnight en the 27th ultimo, and arrived at Oamarn at 9 a.ni. on tbe 28th ; sailed at 11.30 pm. and reached Timaru at 7 a.m. on the 29tb; left at 3 p.m., and arrived at Lyttelton at 4 am. on tbe 30tb; sailed at 1 p.m. and reached Wellington at 11 am. on the 31st; left at 5 p.m. on Saturday, and arrived here aa above. The Wanganui brings a fnll cargo for this port. She sails for Westport and Greymonth at 7 o'clock to-night. Tbe Norwegian bargne Columbia, while on a voyage from London to Quebec, was struck by a large fish or sea monster, and had a hole knocked in her bottom, which caused her to fill and sink in half an hour. The water around the vessel became bloody immediately after the shock was felt. The men bad barely time to escape in the boats. It i$ less than half a century since steam navigation began, and the number of steam vessels lost at sea from 1841 to 1879 is 145. Of these 26 were never heard of after leaving port, 80 were wrecked on the coast, 6 foundered at sea, 8 were abandoned, 3 were lost in collision with icebergs, 4 by collision with other vessels, I capsized, and 11 were burnt; 850 people loat their lives in the ratsaing steamers, 778 by vessels sunk at sea, 533 on boats that were burnt, 1611 by steamers wrecked, 350 in collisions, 80 by other casualties, making a sad total of 4320 burnan lives lost at sea on board steamers iv the last 40 years, or an average of 108 every year.
