CORRESPONDENCE.
To the Editok op the 'Evening Mail.' Sjj'.— A letter appears in the Colonist today, signed '• yvahuea Elector," in which he soya that I passed strictures on Mr Bird's advertisement to the Waimea electors, but it is strauge that Mr Bird immediately withdrew his advertisement, and has not yet coufuted ooe of my statements that appeared in your issue of Tuesday laßt. Then about my
enmity to Mr Shephard; he has not brains enough to see that when the schoolmaster was .appointed I was oae of the constituents of Mr Shephard for the Lower Wakefield school district; that Mr Shephard was our representative at the Board of Education; that he was working with a party who wished to absorb all power and patronage, and that hence I was opposed to that party. That the idea of the uieeiiner originated in Nelson I fairly admit. We decided if Mr Shephard s Committee did not do their duty, viz., immediately demand an explanation from him for breakiog his pledges to his constituents, that a meeting should be called. He whom I consulted had been one of Mr Shephard's staunchest supporters; no big bug, but a man highly respected, living amongst us, and gaining his living by the sweat of his brow. Being perfectly disgusted with Mr Shephard's actions and the supineness of his Committee, he has rendered valuable service in procuring signatures to the petition that is being signed, more freely now that Mr Shephard has had a fortnight to send in his defence and has not done so. Ido not know anything about Puuch and Judy, but I think the hare is already in the snare; let us see how he will wriggle out. I say again I highly respect Mr Shephard as a private gentleman, but as a public man I do not. I do not, however, think that " Waimea Elector" has gumption enough to discern the difference.— Youre, &c, W. Painton. Wakefleld, Oct. 16, 1879.
To tiie Editor of the "Evening Mail." Sik, — Will you oblige us by publishing a list of the names of Mr Shephard's Coumittee, as they appeared in the papers before the elections, as a large number of us did not take any memorandum of them except a few of the stars, and we really do not recollect who they were. Many of us think they ought to be re-published, as the people ou»ht to know who are responsible for Mr Shephard's election, and to some extent for his Btrange conduct.— Yours truly, Ax Elector.
