At the civil sittings of the Supreme Court to-day, the case of Mary Davis v. David Hurst of Wellington, being a claim for £1000 damages for breach of promise of marriage, was heard. In 1878 the plaintiff entered defendant's service as housekeeper, and shortly afterwards the defendant referred to the recent loss of his wife and his consequent •oneliness, and made a proposal which was accepted by the plaintiff and the marriage was arranged to take place within a year, It was further alleged that the defendant seduced the plaintiff, and he frequently referred to their marriage, but constantly put her off. As she could get no satisfaction she brought the present action. The jury, after a brief retirement, gave the plaintiff a verdict for £400 damages.
