Wellington, 10th October, 1879. Dear Sir.— Your telegram saying, " Very strong feeiiDg about your vote re Opposition " has astonished me exceedingly. I declared, when the Waimea election was proceeding, at every place I visited, that I should be no party to denying Sir George a share in carrying out the Liberal measures he had brought forward. Mr Hall's resolution was especially directed against Sir George Grey, hence the words "as at present constituted " I therefore voted against it. Of course, it may be said that Mr Macandrew was also attacked, but the sufficient answer is, that the then Opposition expressed great anxiety to induce him to accept a seat in the new Ministry, and that solely by giving this out, they gained their majority. I am, and for years have been, opposed to the leading members of the new Ministry, and I shall do my utmost to get them out again. { am much grieved that my constituents should so readily accept the Klamltr of my enemies as true statements. Yours faithfully, Joseph Shepiiard. Mr K. M. Smith.
