Giuorr-E Giuoixa, one of the prettiest operas ever put oa the stage in Nelson, was given last night at the Theatre Koyal by the Opera Company, to the immense gratification oi: a large audience. We regret that our space does uot admit of a full account of the performance, because it v,a>;, v/iii;out doubt by far the most successful of the season,' Mi>3 Leaf never showed to greater advantage than in her double personation of Girofle and GiroiU -, her iioriu-r was perfect, Ikt sin»in«was must delightful, and her appearance clKiniiiim. So greatly indeed has she improved since her arrival in Nelson, that we will undertake to say that those who only saw her as Josephine on her first niiji.t here wjll scantily recognise her in the s-imu character this eveniii}.-. The next meeting of the Winter Evening Debating Association will be held iu the All Saints' Institute this evening at half-past seven. Mit Lawrence held his first auction sale ou Saturday last when there was a large attendance, but a paucity of buyers. The Sydney correspondent of this Auckland '■ Herald," writing with reference to the Exhibition, says :— From Nelson has been sent a card of very pretty ornaments, by Mr D. II Jenuiugs, of Motueka, which are'eonstructed, with great taste, of the Pawa shell —a shell having a sheen resembling that of mother-of-pearl, but of a metallic blue lustre. The effects arrived at by the groupiug and combiuatious which enter into these ornaments are very happy, and elicit many expressions of pleasure. I should say that there is business to be done in these shells. At the present time a very lovely pearly sort of small cockle, with a pinky blush in the concave side, which is got by dredging in Sydney harbor, is in every jeweller's shop window here, mounted in gold as earrings, brooches, &c, aud the Pawa shell would contrast with it very effectively if worked up in combination, or mounted separately. Liquidation.— Being about to realise on my stock I have re-marked the whole at prices that ought to effect a speedy clearance. The stock is very large, which most of the Nelson people know, and one that the drawing room as well as the kitchen may be furnished from. This is an absolute clearing sale, and no reasonable offer will be refused john James, Liquidator.— Advt.
