The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1879.

Captain Turnbull, the harbor master at Hokitika, has been appointed to act as Nautical Assessor with the Resident Magistrate in the enquiry into the wreck of the Messenger. He will arrive by the Claud Hamilton on Monday or Tuesday. The usual services will be held at the Presbyterian Church to-morrow, but the Communion service is postponed until the following Sunday. Notices relating to to-morrow'a servicea at the Wesleyan and Congregational Church es will be found in our advertising columns. Quite a novel feature was introduced into the City Council meetings last night by Cr Harley, who, apparently wearied by the mental strain caused by the frequent objections he deemed it necessary to raise to the fortnight's accounts as they were read, calmly proceeded to strike a match and light his pipe as be sat at the Council table. The Mayor and other Councillors were at first perfectly taken aback by so eccentric a performance, but when his Worship had recovered from his surprise he suggested that smoking, although not actually forbidden by the Standing Orders, was not usually regarded as a part of the Council proceedings, j whereupon Cr Harley put hie pipe in his pocket and apologised. There was a large attendance at Mr Mabin's auction rooms this afternoon when the wreck of the barque Messenger was put up for sale. The vessel itself was purchased | by Captain Clouston for £100; the cargo consisting of 150 tons of coal was sold for I £13, and the boats for £13. The; rite of confirmation will be administered by the Bishop of Nelson to candidates presenting themselves at St. Andrew's Church, Wakapuaka, at 11 a.m. to-morrow, and at St. Peter's, in the same district, at 3 p.m. The annual meeting of the Richmond Cricket Club will be held a*, the local Institute this evening at 7.30 Liquidation.— Being about to realise on my stock I have re -marked the whole at prices that ought to effect a speedy clearance. The stock is very large, which most of the Nelson people know, and one that the drawing room as well as the kitchen may be furnished from. This is an absolute clearing sale, and no reasonable offer will be refused John James, Liquidator. — Advt.
