*i.^fV« « mont % meeting wbs held on Saturday, «l« bth of September. Present : All tbe members." «. A minuteß having been read and confirmed, the Oveweer read tho following:— "I am sorry to lave to report that the heavy ruins during tho past month bore done damßge in several parts of the disWiot. At Stoke the bridgo bj Mr Jelljman's wbb Oeitroyed, aDd, as you will perceive, tenderg have been invited for the erection of » new one. Part of the old timber that it not required for the new Structure will be used in making a bridgo on the rr-ain line, at the junction of the Quarantine road, which Was much needed. In Errs' Valley it is not tho actual amount of damage done at the | resent time, but the pro'ective works required to prevent the Washing uway of tho road in some pnrts und of two of the bridges. Here also has been built a brick drain in place of old wooden one decayed, cost £6 17s, including filling. The ford leading to Pigeon Valley is entirely washed away. Mr J. Trice having visited ir, wae of the same opinion as myself, that at present we could do nothing there, and that ■it would be better to purchase a road from Mr Baigent in order to cross the river higher up. We waited on that gentleman for that purpose, but ho declined to sell it as it would cut up his land if the river should at rny time take to its old course ; but lie would allow it to be used by the public, providing t were gravelled, which I had done at once. Thero have been several minor repairs which I have been obliged t-> attend to, such us where sides of road have been destroyed arid gravel washed off. Several persons having complained that access to the Richmond Alley could not be made without getting wetfooted, I have put in some 12in. pipes that were in Store. A long narrow bridge on the Stanley Brcok road has been logged over and widened, cost £7 16s. One on tho Dovednl© line, being undermined, has been served tbe lamo way. I have seen Mr Smith in respect to the purchase of a new road, to avoid one of the nasty pinches near the school iaDovedalf, and he agrees to convey the land at the rate of £2 per acre, and the Board to shift the fcnee. I strongly recommend the acceptance of his offer ; the severance would not be much more than an acre, and the work to be done from eight to ten chaiDs of aide cutting. Mr D. Price asks for two monlhs* extension of time to complete his contract, on account of the bad weather. .The successful tenderer for the small contract of forming in Pigeon Valley, towards which Messrs Fairhall aDd others contribute the one-half, not having put in an appearance, fresh tenders •bould be invited. The bridge on Port road has been passed so far as the carpenter's work is concerned, but Mr Green has not carried out his agreement in respect to the filling. Having obtained the loan of a pile engine, 1 have been able to commence tbe footbridge over the Wai-iti at Forty-line. Part of the bridge by Messrs Hodder and Co.'s store, Richmond, wants ft new top. I have ordered the limber for same. In consequence of the extra calls upon my time, I have nut been able tc complete the report asked for at your Last meeting. The expenditure has been according to your instructions kept as low as possible consistent with the public safety. It M as follow* :— Stcke, £53 6s; Waimea East, £35 13b i Spring Grove, £20 18s; Wakefield, £22 11s 6d ; Waimea West, £24 13a ; Dovedale, £50. Mr Baigent wishes me to bring before your notice that he wishes the road in Pigeon Valley, towards Castle Valley, to be defined." Besolved, That Mr Smith's offer bo accepted, and tbe road laid off and made. That Mr Price's application for extension of time be granted, and fresh tenders invited for work by Mr Fairball's. Also, that the Surveyor set out the road in Castle Valley. Tbe Surveyor reported having marked out a road on Spooner's Range, and also on the Government Dip at Fox Hill, as applied for by Mr Grove. Mrs Morrison attended and objected fo the line of road proposed by Mr Price. Resolved, That the Bnrvejor examine tbe locality for a suitable line and report. A circular from the Colonial Secretary enclosed a form to be filled in with statement cf Board's income and expenditure during tbe past year for presentation to Parliament. Signed and ordered to be forwarded. Letter from Messrs Adams and Kingdon, under instructions from Mr Schwass, complaining of damage done to hie land and tbe road by Mr Russ diverting • watercourse. Resolved, That as in consequence of tbe very high flood it appears doubtful whether the ■mall damage done to the road was caused by any diversion of the watercourse, the Board prefer repairing the road and leaving complainant to settle With Mr Buss. Application received from Messrs Johnston and others to supplement their subscription towards rendering passable the road shown along the north bank of the river in Aniseed V&lley. Besolved, That tbe Board will only undertake to expend money on the most practicable line of road, and from information receivad, they are of opinion that the line now proposed does not meet this requirement. Letter from Mr E. Green thanked the Board for the new bridge, which, however, he considers too high, and that tbe piles Bhonld be now driven two or three feet lower. Has done about £20 worth of labor as hit contribution. Complained that the road on the Port Hills bed not been surveyed, and considers it might be done in two aays, as he would undertake to peg it out. and render any other assistance.
