The signril for a topsail schooner was flying when we went to press. The Lady Bjrkly sailed for Golden Bay early this morning. The Wellington sailed for Picton and Wellington late last night, aud arrived at the latter port this afternoon. The T. B Taylor has finished discharging her cargo cf timber, aud sails for Welllington this afternoon. The Waitnki leaves Onehunga this afternoon, will arrive here to-morrow night, and Bail for Pictou and Wellington at 2 pm. on Frid ay. The Arawata, with the Suez mail, leaves Melbourne to-day. She will only come as far as Wellington this trip. Tho Charles Kdward leaves Westport for Hokitika with to morrow morning's tide. The Kennedy leaves Westport at four this afternoon, and will arrive here to-morrow-morning The Waliaco arrived from Wanganui this morning. She leaves for Clifton at seven to-morrow mtrning, returning in the afternoon, and proceeding to Wellington direct at 10 p.m. The barque Anne Melhuish arrived at the outer anchorage this morning after a passage of II days frtm Newcastle. Capt. Johnston reports leaving th:it port on August 30, and experienced light westerly winds with fiue weather for the first four days, after which strong northerly winds were met with; these lasted for three or four days, when westerly winds again set iu. Cape Fi-rewell was sighted at 10 a m. on Mouday, but owing to meeting with light easterly winds the Spit was not rounded until 6 o"'clock last night, the vessel arriving here as above. Sighted the brig Fawn, bound for Kaipara, and two barques bound westward yesterday. The Anue Melhuish brings 505 tons ot coal, consigned to Mr J. S. Cross, junr. There was no ocean race between the China tea clippers this year, owing to an accident to one of the steamers, the LondoD Castle. As we mentioned the other day the new steamer Glencoe has made the shortest passage on record troru China. She did the passage from Shanghai River to Gravesend, via Malta and Gibraltar, in thirty seven days, thus distancing the P and O. mail steamer by nearly 18 days, when the different route is taken into account. The First Lord of the Admiralty Sir Cooper Key (the hydrographer), and Lord Charles Scott have met and decided the course to be taken by the Bacchante in her forthcoming cruise, and the officers to be appointed to her. The young Princes will visit in the course of their voyage most cf our colonial possessions. The number of deaths of seamen reported to the Board of Trade during the year 1878 as having died in the British Merchant Service, was 3870, and of these 1164 were drowned by wreck, and 922 by accident other than wreck, in addition to which there were 279 other accidental deaths. There were 10 cases of murder and homicide, and 31 of suicide.
