The Colonial Secretary of New South Wales has written to the Colonial Secretary of New Zealand requesting him to cause the Members of the new Parliament of New Zealand to be informed that complimentary season tickets to the Exhibition will be issued to all members arriving in Sydney. Some of the Hutt settlers complain of damage done to their crops by sparrows. One person said the birds destroyed four acres of oats for him.
Ma eton, Wednesday. The returns are all in, and give a majority of 107 for Major Willis.
Dcnedin, Wednesday. At the City Court a jeweller was charged with a breach of the Females Act, and also under the same Act with neglecting to supply the Magistrate of the district with the hours of employment in his factory. Mr Watt, R.M., inflicted a nominal penalty in each instance.
The judgment of the Court re the stranding of the Benares blames everybody in concerned. Captain Thompson, one of the nautical assessors, differed, holdiug that pilot Patter was justified in taking her out, and he forwards a special report to the Governor. All the certificates are returned.
Thursday. At the elections at Dunedin yesterday the numbers were :— Oliver 1944, Dick 1140 Stewart 989, Macassey 744, Reeves 67c| Backer 477. The three first were elected.
Every nerve is being strained by both sides at Port Chalmers. It is believed. that Mr Macandrew will have a small majority. Hokitika, Wednesday. Mr Duncan addressed a very crowded meeting of electors in the Town Hall, the Mayor in the chair, and received an unanimous vote of confidence.
Balclctha, Wednesday. At the nomination to-day, Thompson and Jewett were proposed.
Auckland, Thursday. Mr Moss, a Government supporter, was returned unogposed for Parnell to-day. New Plymoctii, Thursday. Orders have been received for the survey of land at Mokau. The surveyors proceed there to-day.
