The Nelson Evening Mail. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 1879.

The nominations of candidates to fill the vacancies occasioned by the retirement by rotatibn of Messrs Everett, Levien, and Hounsell from the City Council, must be sent in to the Council Office on of before Wednesday next at noon. We are glad to learn that the three retiring geutletnen have all consented to come forward again, as it would be diftcult to find men who would pay a more diligent attenifoti to the work they are prepared to undertake. The nomination for the Suburbs takes place at the Provincial Hall at noou tomorrow. Mtt. Pitt's Committee will meet at the Temperance Hall to-aight instead of the Masonic Hall. Mk. Hursthouse will address the eiectofs at Waimea West to-morrow evening. The nomination for the Motueka district, of which Waimea West forms a part, will take place on Wednesday. Up to the present time no opponent to Mr Hursthouse has appeared on the scene. Our readers are reminded of the entertainment at the Christ Church Sunday Schoolroom this evening, for which occasion a very excellent programme has been prepared. The Customs doties for the month ending August 31st, 1879, amounted to £3817 15s lid, made up 83 follows:— Spirits, JE7BO 4s 6d; cigars, £19 13s 9d; tobacco, £488 7s Id; wine, £47; beer, £44 2s 7d; coffee, £23 7s 6d; sugar, £167 4s sd; goods by weight, £97 7s 6d; Ad Valorem, £IfiO9 Is 4d; other duties, £42 6s 7d; other receipts, £136 1 9s lOd. There was a good attendance at the Theatre on Saturday night, when Rayner'a diorama of the Russo-Turkish war was exhibited. The different scenes are very spiritedly pourtrayed, and were viewed with great interest. At the close of the performance there was the usual distribution of valuable gifts. The diorama, which is well worth seeing, will be on view again to-night for the last tirde. Liquidation. — Being about to realise on my stock I have re-marked the whole at prices that ought to effect a speedy clearance. The stock is very large, which most of the Nelson people know, and one that the drawing room as well as the kitchen may be furnished from. This is an absolute clearing sale, and no reasonable offer will be refused. John James, Liquidator.— Advt.
