Mr Adams : If what he said was true, that she was wanted in view of a Maori disturbance, I think he was; hut it seems to me that she was required more for the convenience of Ministers. Mr Rowell said he knew all about it. The Governor was allowed a man-of-war to remove him to Victoria, or a sum of money to pay his passage. He wanted to pocket the money, and cadge the Hinemoa (laughter). He then asked Mr Adams' opinion of Mr Barton's charges. Mr Adams thought the Grey Government should have granted tbe enquiry, as it would bave tended to protect the honor of the Judges who were charged, but he was not prepared to say that any of the charges were founded on fact. Mr Rowell : Will you endeavor to get the rocks removed from tbe mouth of the harbor, and so get it made less of a tidal one ? Mr Adams thought if they were going to get the trunk line of railway, tbey ought to improve the harbor. Mr Rowell : I had some intention of contesting this election myself on the harbor ticket, leaving it to you to fight about the railway (laughter). I'now propose a vote of thanks to Mr Adams for his address, and confidence in him as n representative. Mr Sclanders would second the motion. His opinion of Mr Adams' ability and desire to serve Nelson had undergone no change since he proposed him six months ago. He was then elected by a large majority, aud he did not think they bad any cause to find fault with him. With regard to the honorarium business be could not too strongly deprecate making that a test question. If they did, the Nelson people would be laughed at, as they had elected Mr Adams on account of his views on the larger questions of the day, such as taxation, education, and the railway, on all of which those views remained the same, while be had shown the ability to advocate them in the House. He sincerely trusted that the electors would not place Nelson in so humiliating a position. The resolution was then put to the vote, and carried unanimously, amidst the most enthusiastic cheering. A thoroughly successful meeeting was brought to a close by a vote of thanks to the Chairman, the proceedings throughout having been of a most orderly character.
