MAGISTRATES' COURT.

[Before 11. E. Curtis and S. Kingdon, Esqs. J.J. P.] 4 Henry Jackson was charged by the police with cruelty to a horse by working it when in an unfit state on account of two sores on its shoulders. Defendant pleaded not guilty

Constable Hawkshaw said he saw the defendant with a horse having two sores on its shoulders, one an old, and the other a new one, in a cart Jaden with coal, with which he was about to start. H e examined the horse and spoKe to the man, who at once unharnessed it and took it home. The Superintendent of Police said it was not a bad case, and that he did not press for a heavy penalty, but merely brought it forward as a warning to others. Defendant and his witn^ssj Mr ArmstJbng. The Chairman said that it did not appear to be a bad case, but the police were quite right in briuging it into C.urt. Defendant ad nutted the debt, but asked for time Mr Pitt objected to time being granted without a guarantee, as there was another summons out against the defendant, who was also to be sued by the City Council. Defendaut said he could ouiy pay in instalments, and attributed his troubles to a great extent to the notice of the Council's intention Which had appeared in the papers. Judgment was entered for the amount claimed and costs, £3 to be paid next week, and the balance in monthly instalments of £2. Levien v. G. Jackson.— Action to- recover £10 8s for goods supplied.
