The Premier after leaving Christchurch goea to Invercargill, and is expected to return to Wellington about the 31st, and to leave almost immediately for the North apeaking at Napier, Auckland, and the Thames. The report that the five million loan was subscribed is contradicted. Dnring the quarter ending June, the imports to the colony were valued at £1,791,264, and for the corresponding quarter of 1878* £1,560,273. The exports for the last quarter were £1,292,580 as against. £1,186,412 for the corresponding quarter of last year. The Btamp duty collected in Wellington last year was £53,686. The Wellington Fusilier Guards, a new corps, is being formed. The question raised as to Mr Fisher's disqualification for election is likely to be settled by the law officers of the Crown. Mr Charles O'Neil is talked of as another candidate for Wei ington. ." Matherson, a jockey, is remanded on two charges of larceny. Part of the reclaimed land mystery is cleared np, the basket of clothes having been left at the breastwork in mistake by an
expressman. The female screams heard by the policeman are still unexplaiued. The writs for the new elections will be issued on Monday, and made returnable by the 17th or ISth of next month. Saturday. Arrangements are made for a Wellington football team going to plav the South. The team leaves Wellington ou the 22nd, and will arrive at Christchurch on the B:.rd, in time to see the match between Otago and Canterbury. The Wellington men play Otago on the 25! h, and Canterbury on the 28th, returning to Wellington on tbe 29th. In regard to the Maori prisoners, a Committee of chiefs has been nominated who have taken legal advice as to the course to be pursued. The Committee consists of Wi Tako, Wi Parata, Hoani Nahe, Major Kemp, and four others of lesser note, aud these have decided to lay the following case before the whole of the tribes interested in the confiscated lands throughout New Zealand, and will send itout iu the form of a manifesto:— That they will resort to no acts of violence in the assertion of their claims, but leave everythinginabeyance,presumablyontheconditiou that the Government will take no further action re the surveys or occupation for the present. Respecting confiscated lands, the Committee through their lawyers are preparing an Act to enable a test case to be brought before the Supreme Court of Ap peal, and then if there are any questions which that Court will decline the responsibility of finally settling, the matter will be sent before Ilet Majesty the Queen in Council assembled, where the whole question wili be gone into aud finally disposed of. A large reinforcement of Armed Constabulary, with an unusually large supply of stores and war material, will be forwarded to the front in a few days. It is anticipated that this is in preparation to marching on Parihaka. The Liberal Reform Association have decided to submit to a full meeting of the Association the action of the Committee in bringing forward Messrs Hutcheson aud Fisher as candidates of the Association, iu order that the whole body of the Association may either endorse their choice of caudidates or nominate others. Ciiristch URcir, Saturday. The Canterbury Corn Exchange reports average business during the week. Wheat has advanced since last week, and there is a strong demand for local aud export use. The supply is limited, seed wheat in clean condition 4s 4d to 4s 6d; milling 4s 4d; chick 3s 6d to 3s 7d; oat9 in demand, prime nrilliug 2s 8d to 2s 9d; feed 2s 6d to 2s 7d; barley for malting the demand exceeds the supply, best 5s 9d to 6b; medium 4s 6d to 5s 6d; feed 2a 9d to 3s 6d; for potatoes there is an increased demand, and the market has a rising tendency, BlueDerwents £1 10s to £3 15s 6d; kidneys very short supply, prime £9 to £10; grass seed, market well supplied, first class 5s 6d to 5s 9d; cheese 6d to 6id; butter 8d to 9d. A fire broke oufc in the house of Mr T. Draper at Waltham early this morning. The fire, which cannot be accounted for, broke out in the parlour next the shop, and tbe inmates had scarcely time to escape before the entire building was in flames. It was soon burnt to the ground. Dunedin, Frrday night. There was a proposal under consideration to amalgamate the Commercial and Union Building Societies, and Mr Hawkins, the Secretary to the latter, was requested by the Directors to furnish a list of the liabilities and assets. This was not forthcoming and on Saturday he called on Mr Nation, the Company's Solicitor wi*h a statement showing £1400 to be deficient, at the same time handing to him a box containing strychnine which, he said, he had contemp'ated using As the result of the investigation of the books by the Directors he was locked up, and it now transpires that he was also a defaulter to the Kaitangata Coal Company, and tbe Church Society. The charges of embezzlement have been partially gone into and bail is refused. Saturday. Mr Davie does not intend to 9tand for the City. Efforts are being made to bring Mr Bradshaw out in the Grey interest. Balclctha, Saturday. A railway accident occurred and a portion of the traiu ran off the line. John Chalmers got jammed against the engine, and sustained severe internal injuries aud died at two o'clock this morning. Wanganci, Saturday. An enthusiastic meeting of Sir W. Fox's supporters was held in the Wanganui Institute last night. The hall was crowded and an influential working Committee of 80 members was appointed. Mr Bryce hps issued an independant address but is running with Mr Ballance.
