Levin to be a candidate for tbe City, and a large requisition is in course of preparation to induce Mr R. Greenfield to stand. Mr Seymour George has decided for Rodney. Grace and Harry Evans, recently arrived in the Pareora, and who, had only been married one day, were charged with obtaining money under false pretences. The man was sentenced to three months, and the woman to one month with hard labor. Monday. A cable message received from London states that a deputation of merchants and owners waited on the Chancellor of the Exchequer on the question of the mail service, a result of which has been that the Orient Steam Company have expressed their readiness to carry the Australian colonies mails (a fortnightly service) to and from Naple9 for the postages. A committee of clerk 3 and messengers are going to present Mr O'Rorke with a handsome illuminated address in recognition of his services in procuring for them halfpay during the recess. The writs for the new election will be issued within the next four days and made returnable by the 17th September next. The Premier and Native Minister will visit Nelson in a few days. It ia understood the Premier will commence the electionering campaign there. The New Zealand tea per Menmuir comes to Wellington direct per Wakatipu, which leaves Sydney on tbe 15th instant. The Sydney Exhibition has been definitely fixed to open on the 17th September. Marton, Saturday night. Mr Walter Johnston is coming forward for Manawatu. Major Willis is still running alone for Rangitikei. Timarc, Saturday night. Judge Ward will probably be a candidate for Timaru, at the forthcoming election Mr Wakefield is also spoken of. Auckland, Monday. Mr Moat, an Oppositionist, contests Rodney against Mr Seymour George and Mr Farvell.
