WAIMEA COUNTY COUNCIL.

The Council met on Wednesday. Present all the members. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The Chairman read a letter from the Chairman of the Suburban North Highway Board, stating that that Board had accepted the tender of Mr \V. H. Alborough for forming the first section of the Kai Vailey Koad. The Chairman also read a letter from the Undersecretary, declining to date the reduction in the Wairoea County subsidies from Ist January, as requestedby the Council; from the Under-Secretary for Public Works, stating the inability of the Government to comply with the request of the Council for placing the sum of £3000 ou the Estimates for that portion of the road from Nelson to Westport and Greymouth lyiag within the County; from the Under-Secretary for Public Works, refusing the request of the Council for a vote for the completion of the Pigeon Valley and Stanley Brook road. A memorandum from Mr Blackett, Resident Engineer, referring to certain charges for the repair of the pound at Suburban North under his direction, amounting to £13 7s 6d, and requesting the Council to settle the claims, was considered. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Shephard, seconded by Mr Macmahon, That the Council cannot recognize any claims for payment of money expended without its authority. Mr Shephard presented a petition from certain licensed victuallers carrying on business at Motueka and Riwaka, stating that the

license fees for the accommodation houses kept by them had been received by the Licensing Commissioners to the full sum of £30, and praying that the Council would grant such relief as would place them in the same position as they have hitherto been. After takiug into consideration the whole of the circumstances in connection with their case, the Chairman was requested to inform the petitioners tb^t they had failed to show that they were rendering any service to the County which entitled them to such recognition as they sought. A draft of a petition to the House of Representatives, praying for a vote of £1000 i for the purpose of completing the new road leading over the ranges from Motueka to Collingwood, was presented by Mr Macmahon. This petition had been adopted by the Motueka Highway Board, and they sought the co-operation of the County Council. On the motion of Mr Shephard, seconded by Mr Dencker, it was resolved, That the petition be adopted, and the Chairman sign it on behalf of the Council and affix its Beal thereto. On the motion of Mr Bird, seconded by Mr Wells, it was resolved, That Messrs Macmahon, Shephard, and the Chairman be appointed members of the Hospital Committee. On the motion of Mr Bird, seconded by Mr Wells, it was resolved, That the Council sanction the drawing of the cheque for £150 on the County funds by members of the Hospital Committee. On the motion of Mr Wells, seconded by Mr Bird, it was resolved, That the Government be requested to authorise the local Justices of the Peace to visit the Orphanage at Motueka from time to time, and in conjunction with the Magistrate already appointed for that purpose to inspect the same, and report on the management to the Government. The draft of the proposed new by-laws under the Slaughter Houses Act, prepared by the Board's solicitor, was read and discussed, and the Chairman was authorised to forward them for the Governor's approval after further consultation with the solicitor to the Council. On the motion of Mr Macmahon, seconded by Mr Wells, it was resolved, That the Council will from time to time place the funds at its disposal in the hands of the several Road Boards in the County for expenditure on the trunk or leading roads within their respective limits, and that in the distribution of its funds the Council will take into consideration any repairs that may be specially necessary on any such trunk roads. The Council then adjourned to Wednesday, 20th August.
