WAIMEA ROAD BOARD.
At the monthly meeting on Saturday, July 5, all tbe members were present. After the minutes had been read, the Overseer reported: — " Io consequence of the monkey aud pile engine being required at the approach to the Appl.by bridge, tbe one by Mr Green's had not been proceeded with. After consulting with the Boara'. engineer, it waa re.olved to utilize some of the timber in store io making a span of 30 feet, and to let the approach remain as it is, with the exception of some minor protective worka, which have been done. It will be necessary to stop tbe traffic for a few days, bot 1 have flagged off the ford, which is a very shallow one, and made god the road on tbe western side, so th .t as little inconvenience ac possible will be caused to tbe public by the closing of the bridge. Directly the piles are driven, I purpose driving three or four piles for the foot-bridge at Forty-line, as the pile engine is oo ite way to the 88 Valley stream, to be used at the breakwater - tbere. Wben this is done it will be available for the bridge at Stoke. — Mr Paynter has submitted to me a sample of screened gravel, which appears very good, and which he will supply at 4. per yard at bis pit, or at 5a 51 delivered anywhere between the Turf Hotel and Eyles'sroad. — Mr O'Connell has finished his contrast at Richmond. I should recommend the remainder to be formed, as it is as bad as that portion was tbat has just been repaired. — An eight-inch pipe drain has been put acroes the swamp toad by Mr Canning's, — Mr Stratford has done No I. contract in Aniseed Valley. — The bridge hy Mr Peinton's has been raised and had new plaoking.— The road from the Railway station at Foxhill has been fresh gravelled; also a portion from Mr TauoicliS'B to the bridge—cost £22. Whenever tbe weather permitted, the gravel carts bave been constantly employed in ali parts of the district. — It has been necessary to anchor some large trees to the end of tbe brakes to protect fordway in tbe Wai-iti leading to Pigeon Valley.— Three brick drains have replaced old wooden structures, costing £5 12s eacb, on tbe road by Mr Dron's. There are seveu similar ones wanted on the Moutere Hills road, the present wooden ones being rotten. There are now plenty of bricks ,in stock, as Mr Osborne is prepared to deliver the balance pf bis contract.— The expenditure .during the past /month has been as folio we;— Stoke. £19 6s 4i; Waimea East; £ 8a 19.; Spring Grove, £84 14s _J_j Wakeleld, £61 4s 3d; Waim.a WW, £83 3s 4d; Dovedale, £17 Bs. -■ -Resolved, Thai notice be; given .when the Appleby bridge will be < stopped, and that farther .".work on; Sutton's road be deferred until the spring. Resolved, That in order to reduce.: expenditure, nothing but what is absolutely necessary be done dnring the next month. Letters received from Mr Grove, stating that he had met the Resident Engineer, who had arranged as to where a bridge or a railway crossing shall be made, and requesting the Board to lay off and proclaim the road as speedily as possible. Resolved, That Mr Grove be informed that the Boad congratulate him on his success in making an arrangement with the Railway Engineer, but that he must be under a misapprehension as to the Board laying out thp rosd, as it was , understood that he only required the Board to recommend the procuring of a Hue of road. Resolved, That tenders be invited for tbe supply of horses and carts. Resolved, That notice be given that parties removing sand from the road at Stoke without the Board's permission will be prosecuted. Memorial received frptq Mr Green S-SS?,, 41 ? io attendance, urged immediate attention being given to tbis matter, as being of much importance that he was willing to defray the cost of the neceseary survey. Resolved That Mr Carkeek be requested to lay off this line at once. Besolved, That the Surveyor examine the line through Sunday Valley to Stanley Brook, aod make an estimate of cost. Besolved, That notice be given to all persons occupying roads to pay rent. Besolved, That the Oyerseer have repairs to tbe extent of £10 effected on the Quail Valley road. "Warrants were signed for £459 12s 7d.
