MOTUEKA HIGHWAY BOARD.
Mohthlt Meeting June 28th, 1879. t ; Preaeot — Meesrs. Askew, Bisley, 1 Bnrrell, Carter, and Edwards. In the absence of Mr Macmahon, Mr Bisley was appointed Chairman of the meeting. After the minutes of the last meetinghad been confirmed, and accounts for the current month passed for payment. The Secretary reported — In accordance with ipstrnctions given me test meeting; I prepared sperirfica--tions and invited tenders for constructing a pile bridge on the main" road, near M'Conocbie's. Messrs Bisley, M'Conochte, and myself met for the consideration of tenders sent io, and accepted one from Mr John Allcott* for the sum of £39 12s. Two more tenders were receivsd, one amounting to £47, and the otber to £49 155.— 1 have made 1 enquiries respecting tbe price of corrugated iron for re-roofing the storehouse at Riwaka, and find that the cost will not be greatly in excess of good shingles. — The daymen have bet en employed daring tbe past month defeeingj water-tables, filling ruts and hole*-,' andj making otber necessary repairs where] required. — The contractors for making the new track on the Takaka ranges have signed the contracts, and havegone up to begin the work. — I have, inspected the dangerous place reported on the Sandy Bay Track, and am of opinion that a great improvement can! ' be made at a cost of abbot £5, provided no eoljid rock is met with. — I estimate the cost of making a footpath upon one! side of tbe road in High-street, MotiH eka, at £2 10a per chain, using heart of totara timber for curbing. Copy of letter from Secretary to Mij Haddow (trustee in the estate of the! late Thomas Heath) read ; also Mr 1 Haddow's. reply, agreeing on behalf of tbe Trustees to accept the amount offered by the Board as compensation In full for tbe land required for tbe new road at Pangatotara where it passes through the properly. Copy of letter to the Minister of . Public Works read ; also a reply from tbe Onder-Secretary, stating that the Minister regretted being unable to pay over to the Board the extra amount of £60 for which tbe work upon the Takaka ranges has been let, as the whole of the vote for this work was exhausted. Copy of letters to Resident Engineer* Nelson, read, recommending the desirability of more willows being planted •ear the Motueka bridge approaches for the protection of the same; also suggesting whether it would not be advisable (in order to lessen the straio upon the bridge) that horsemen and drivers of vehicles should be cautioned against riding or driving across the bridge faster than at a walking pace ; and qlbo again drawing his attention to the water being dammed back upon the road by the filling at tbe new Court house* Letter from tbe Resident Engineer read, «tatiag that he would-be obliged to the Secretary if be would get the necessary work done in front' of the Court, House, if he is fully convinced that' it is required, and send in the claim to him. j that be could take no action with regard to willow planting at Motueka bridge at present; and that while thanking the Secretary for the sagges- ; tion re warning to person a not to cross the bridge faster than at a walking pace with horses and vehicles, tie did not consider such caution to be necesResolved, That the Secretary have tbe necessary work done in front of the Court House as requested by the Residens Engineer, as there can be no question about the necessity. LetterTrbm Mr Tucker read, requesting that s Blight alteration might be made in the surveyed line of road through his property. Resolved, That the Secretary carefully inspect tbe alteration BBked for by Mr Tucker, and if such alteration will not add materially to tbe cost of making the road, it be agreed to. ■■ Letter from Mr Drogmuller read, respecting a disused road being made over to him, or that tbe Board pay him the sum of £20, in accordance with a promise made by the )ate M.outere Road Bo»r<l. Resolved, That the Secretary inform Mr Df Dgemuller the Board will as soon as possible hand over to him the disused road referred to* The Secretary stated that a krtter had been received from Messrs Fell and Atkinson respecting, thefampuiit of compensation required by- Meeers Thomas ß>6S; fdr ther'irew road passing through their' properly, and' that he had for Warded the letter to tbe Chairman of the Board. Resolved, That the consideration of this nsaifor be deferred, tintil next meeting. Resolved, That the Secretary at his earliest convenience lay off the proposed alteration in the Sandy Bay Track, and have the necessary work done. The member for NgatitnaU stated that Mr Parkinson h,ad apoten to him - About having no road to his land at Price's Gap. Resolved, That the Secretary inspect ihe road at Price's Gap, and ascertain #hat Mr Parkinson desires to have done. Mr Charles Limmer having made an offer to grub up certain gorse growing open the road alongside bis property for $he sum of 5s per chain, ■ Resolved, That the Board will con* tribute the sum of £2 10s towsrtis grubbing op the gorse growing uppn the road referred to.
