ARRIVAL OF THE CHAUDIERE.
The barque signalled on Saturday afternoon proved to be the Chaudiere from London. The passage has occupied 118 days from the time of discharging the pilot. She made a splendid run of 72 days to Tasmania, but owing to the prevalence of strong S.E. winds, she was unable to make what promised at first to be a rapid passage out. The Chaudiere came to an anchor on Saturday night, but got under weigh yesterday morning, and arrived at the outer anchorage in the afternoon. She was towed into harbor by the Wallace this morning, and berthed alongside the Government Wharf, Regarding the passage Captain Scott reports leaving the East India Docks on February 18; anchored in the Downs next day, leaving again on the 21st; discharged the pilot on the 23rd, and took final departure from the land same day. Fresh N.E winds were experienced as far as Madiera, thence variable winds were met with until picking up the Trade winds on March 6, in latitude 21-30 N., long. 2518 W. They proved moderate, aud carried the vessel to lat. 5-18 N.; then the usual amount of variables were experienced, the Equator being crossed on March 2'jth in longitude 24-26 W; lost the trades on March 29, in lat. 19 23 S.,long. 3111 W., and on the same day exchanged signals with the ship West Riding, bound from Adelaide to Falniouth, 74 days out. On April Ist strong S.E. winds set in, accompanied by a heavy sea, and continued until April 12, when the " brave westerlies " were met with. The east ing was ran down between the parallels of 45 and 46. On May 18, winds varying from S.E. to N.E. set in, and continued until sighting Mount Cook on Wednesday last. Here baffling winds were experienced, and lasted until arrival here as above.
