[PBEBS AGENOT.I . Wellington, Eriday. Notice of motion will be given in the City Council that it is advisable before the Council irretrievably pledges itself to any of the nval drainage schemes, that the whole question may be submitted to a Board of competent Engineers, who will decide as to the merits of each question without reference to anybody. Gleich, the Adelaide bankrupt, was released to-night, and the sixteen diamond rings found on him will be returned, but it is probable the point raised being one of Colonial importance, will be brought before the Imperial Legislature to decide. SSSIE^ Sl!ki
xue ninerooa sailed at six o'clock to-night with the Governor and Premier for New Plymouth. . A full Court of ' Judges have just delivered ]nd«uient «» toe case of Gleich, the defaulting Adelaide bankrupt. The Chief Justice gave it as his opinion that the Legislature had no power claimed under the Act ; that the warrant was bad and that ths prisoner was entitled to hi 3 discharge. Judges Johnston, Richmond, and Williams concurred, but Judge Gillies took an opposite view though with diffidence. Saturday. The Nefo Zealander says " a man, on whose word we can rely, informed us late last night that he had brought to town several ounces of alluvial gold found in one of the up country districts." It says it is not at liberty to mention names. DtHTEbtK, Friday. At nine o'clock last night the steamer Lady Bird, which was lying at the Kattraystreet Wharf, discovered that the water was pouring into the engine compartment, and had reached withiu eighteen inches of the engine room. Steam was at once got up in the donkey engine, and aithough h threw out large quantities of water it was found to be gaining. By ten o'clock steam was got up in the boilers, and the water was nearly all out at twelve. The cause of the leak is supposed to be that on the tide going out, she had settled down upon a stake. She had only come out of dock yesterday. She will be placed in again and surveyed to-day. Christchukch, Saturday. Ford and Co.'s sale of Mr Nicholson's race horses resulted as follows:— Fishhook, £650 (bought by Robert Ray); Middleton, £45: Te Whiti, £80; The Moose, £30; Luna, £55; Ethelred, £25; Sir Tatton, £7 10s. The bidding for Mr Horsefall's horses was so bad that they were withdrawn. New Plymouth, Friday. Mr Parris returned from Parihaka last night. He was received by Te Whiti and 200 followers very courteously. Te Whiti denied any intention to injure the Europeans, but he admitted that the ploughing of Mr Courtney's land was done under his orders, and he signified his intention ofprtoeeding with that and other and similar workings. Mr Parris told him he was acting foolishly, and would bring trouble on his head. There is no danger of bloodshed on the part of the Maoris at present, but it is impossible to gay how soon some settlers may resist the spoliation of their land. _ Later. Mr Parris' visit to Paribaka has evidently not resulted in favor of peace. Te Whiti is detei mined to have the matter out with the Government, and nolhing is left for it apparently but to fight. This affair has entirely suspended all business here and at Patea, and a very dull winter is looked forward to. It has quite spoilt the prospects of these districts for two years. _, Saturday. The Governor, Premier, and Col. Whitmore landed from the Hinemoa at noon and were received by a guard of honor and a large number of settlers. The party will be entertained by Mr Caverhill during their stay.
