fPBKSS AQESCT.I Wellington, Monday. The Government decline to alter the holiday for Queen's Birthday from Saturday till Monday. T. J. Mountain, grocer, and 1L Devcrill, photographer, have called meetings of their creditors. The Government will not take any steps in reference to the statement recently made in the 7 imam Hemld regarding the Government cheques. The balance at the Bank to the credit of the Government at the time referred to was £243,000. The Government have received a telegram from Mr Sheehan stating that he had started for Kikiku to arrange with Rewi regarding throwing open some additional country, and setting it aside for railway purposes. Another detachment of the Armed Constabulary will be forwarded to fatea by the first steamer. Yesterday Bis Excellency travelled by special train to the Hutt, the carriage being lighted by gas from a gasoline machine. The arrangement is the work of a local tradesman, who only succeeded after several experiments. The machine is placed in the luggage van aud the gas is conveyed by means of India rubber tubim*. The light was so brilMant that one conld read by it easily in any part of the carriage. This is said to he the first instance in which gas has been manufactured in the train and burnt in it. The Divorce Court is sitting today. There are nine cases on the list. That of Henderson v. Henderson, from Auckland, is a curious case, in Avhieh the petitioner, a boy of between H and 15, alleges that he was dragged into marriage with a girl of 21. The rule nisi applied for was granted, the respondent not appearing.— Hawey v. Hawey, of Christchurch. In this case the petitioner, a farmer near Southbridge, discovered an improper intimacy between his wife and a hired man named Alfred Jones, 21 years of age. They had been married in 1869, and had five children. A rule nisi was granted.— Rules absolute were granted in the following cases: Matthews v. Matthews, of Wellington; Jeffrey v. Jeffrey, of Cbristchureh; Digby v. Digby, of Christchurch ; and George v, George, of Wellington. Auckland, Monday. The schooner Madonna, from Fiji, brings Levuka papers to May 2nd.— H.M. ships Wolverine and Cormorant have arrived from Wellington.— The schooner Undine is missing, and is supposed to have been wrecked between Ano and Levuka. Two vessels had been sent in search.— The schooner Stanley, returned from a labor cruise, reports losing one of her boats with four men during a gale. The captain says that possibly the boat may have reached the shore. The captain also reports that the Irjian Government agent with the mate and a boat's crew of the Mystery had been murdered at Aoba. Mr Smith, another Government agent, was also fired at by the natives of Erononga, but escaped.— H.M.S. Cormorant has sailed for Torres Straits to receive Sir 'Arthur Gordon from the mail steamer, when he will visit New Guinea, New Brittain, and the other islands, and then return to Fiji in July. The gale abated last night and there was a heavy down pour of rain. The station house and refreshment at Mercer on the Waikato railway were destroyed by fire this morning. It is rumored that Captain Colbeck of Auckland will be called to the Upper House. CiiKiSTCnußcn, Monday. William Bernard, a butcher at Kaiapoi, was brought up this morning charged with stealing about 300 sheep, the preperty of Mr Chapman, a runholder at the Moeraki Downs. The case was remanded for a week, bail being granted, the prisoner in £200 and two securities of £100 each. J. Oram Sheppard was fined £5 for keepthe White Hart Hotel open during prohibited hours. The defence was that the offence was committed in the billiard-room, which is not connected with the Hotel. ; _ Westport, Monday. Ihe body of Mrs Crawford was picked up j on the beach to-day by Mr Gibson of I Orawaiti. Hokitika, Monday. | Raff erty and party of Back Creek have driven 500 feet into the entrance, and are well satisfied with the prospects. They have come upon gold, but intend driving a few feet further. There is every probability that these workings will support a considerable number of miners. Specifications for a section of the Hokitika — Greymouth railway, to be let by contract, are to be ready to-day, when tenders will be at once called for.
