M'Lennan, brought up charged with the murder of his wife was remanded for eight days, pending the conclusion of the inquest which was adjourned till April 30th, pending the analysis of the stomach of Mrs M'Lennan by Dr. Hector, on whose arrival in Nanier the inquest will be resumed. a , _ Adc k&and, Saturday. A fire broke out m M'Leod Brothers soap works to-day. About 11-50 a.m. it was discovered that there was a leak in the retort just outside the soap works, audi hat steariue matter was squirting on to the retort. Bags of lime were placed on the heated iron, but the fire continued despite the afforts of the men, and by noon the flames had spread to the roof, which soon took fire. The flames took such a hold that the works were completely destroyed. The fire also spread to the adjoining portion of the Otago Foundry. The candle works, building, and plant were insured for £2000, viz., £lQoo in the National office, and a like sum in New Zealand. The soap works were insured for £500 in the Standard, and £500 in the New Zealand. The private dwelling-house occupied by Mr A. M'Leod was injured to the extent of £200 through water, breakage, &c. It was insured for £400 in the South British. Messrs M'Leod Brothers estimate their loss at £10,000 over and aboT c the insurances, A portion of the machinery for the candle \ works had only recently been fitted up. The plumbers were working up till midnight yesterday, and M'Leod Brothers were congratulating themselves on being able to make a fair start to-day. Included in their loss there have been destroyed 100 tons of soap I gently manufactured, valued at £2000. The fire at the foundry was confined to the engine and boiler shop, and the damage may be roughly estimated at £700. Mr Davidson was insured in the Norwich (Jnion for £1600. acd for £450 in the National. While the fire , was at its height several sensational reports were circulated. !
