WAIMEA ROAD BOARD
The usual monthly meeting was held '•■ on Saturday, May 3rd, when all the memhers were pres'-nt. The minutfg of the last snd special meeting having been confirmed, thp Overseer reported a. follows : — " I have succeeded in obt ftining a }/ood supply of metal from lhe be<ls at Sfohe — In Waimea East Mr Kearna has finished his gravel contract on the Cemetery road,* about four more chains are needed to be done.— The culvert on Mr Shane's line has been rebuilt with brick wal's, aDd enlarged to 2 fa and brought in line with the other roud. Cost, including gravelling, £24. — About nine chains of metalling has bPfn done by Mr Best's, at Appleby.— Mr John Rutherford asks to be supplied with 500 feet of timber (or a top to a bridge which he is about to rebuild over his mill Ipad, Although it ie on private property it is much used by the public, more especially if the river is at all up.— l bave had tbe upper ford again cleared out.— lt is suegested to gravel Mr Sutton's line from the Richmond pit, and to clear out the water tables with the day men.— The men are now at work on Mr Warren's road, which has been ploughed by the inhabitant?, who are also willing to assist in metalling from tbe banks oa Clover rood. — As the works have been so rr.'ssiog this month, I have been obliged to employ extra labor iv most of the sub-districts in order to lake advantage of the fine weather.—-Ten-ders have been invited for improving the Aniseed Valley road. — I bave visited the road for which a grant was applied ior by Messrs B. Fairhall, aod others. They want eight chains of forming. an! a small bridge and if the Board will invite tenders lor tbe work they will deposit half (be amount of tbe contract.— The road over Spooner's range is being attended to. It needed a great deal of repair. The same miaht be said of the road iv Quail Valley I which is also receiving attention.— Tenders have been called for the breakwater at Eighty-eight Valley stream, recommended by the deputation of the Board who visited the spot.— Mr Lenhy has finished his contract of gravelling in Waimea West, amounting to £112, — Some gravelling his also b* en done on tbe Moutere bills and Eves' Valley. —•The amount expended in the different sub-districts during the pnst month baa been as follows j — Stoke, £37 Is; Waimea East, £103 17s 7-1 j Spriog Grove, £38 10a 9i; Wakefield, £8214j4J; Waimea. West, £162 7e 6d| ; Dove(|ale,£9 9.. Resolve., That Mr Rutherford have the bridge timber applied for, and that tenders. be invited for the work in Pigeon Valley. — Hco-Ittoj^rirnt tho following tenders be accepted : J. Andrews, gravelling in Eighty-eight Valley, at 13*. 6d. per chain ; W. L. Stratford, forming in Aniseed Valley, £45 10?.; and H. Norgate for bridge at Stoke, £45, pro. vided tbe applicant for such bridge sign an agreement as to the proposed contribution. No eligible tender being received. for the breakwater, fresh tenders will.be juvited. Tbe, Surveyor reported baviqg seen other parties io Waimea West relative to an alteration in road as desired by Messrs. Walter apd others, and that all the parties declined fo sell a site. A letter was received from the chairman of the County Council requesting to be furnished with a statement of the rateable value of property io the district, and of total rates received dariog tbe year ended March 31 The Secretary reported having already furnished the required statement, aod also one to tbe Treasury. Letters were received from the Regis-trar-General and from the. Public Works Office requiring returns to be furnished. The Secretary reported that he ie preparing to give the required information. Letters received from Mr James Grove, requesting the Board to take steps to provide a road to his property. Resolved, That the Surveyor examine the plans for the railway, aod report. Messrs Daviee and others attended, and requested that the Board would increase the subsidy promised about two years ago for improving a road in Dovedale, from poe-balf to two -thirds, and also extend similar assistance to a further length of about fifty chains. Resolved, That as the road in question only leads to the applicants'properties, from which only a small amount of rate is derived, the application cannot be acoeded to. : Mr Davies also applied to be paid for extra stuff removed in his late con- ' tract for lowering a bank, alleging that according to the wording of the epacification he was entitled to such payment, as oo reference to the plan aod specification there did not appear lo be any error of calculation as the same had been set out and executed, and that extra payment was only contingent on an alteration of gradient. The Board considered that no claim had been established. Resolved, That tenders be invited for improving Sutton's road. Warrants were signed for £540 6a Id,
