The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, MAY 3, 1879.
With to-day's issue we publish a supplement, in which will be found the official list of objections to names on ;the electoral rolls for Nelson, the Suburbs, Waimea, and Motueka. The Customs receipts for the week ending this day were £586 10s lid, and for the month ending April 30, 1879, £2,848 119 4d. A presentation of a handsome writing desk was made at the Nelson Hotel by the members of the City Rifles to SergeantMajor Whitwell, who is about leaving for Sydney. Captain Bunny, in making the presentation, mentioned the loss the Compauy would sustain by losing him, and alluded to the efficient manner in which he had discharged the duties of Secretary for the past four years. The recipient, in responding, thanked the members for the kind present they had made him, and expressed the great regret he felt in severing his connection with the Company, and said .that wherever he went he should always look back with pleasure to the happy days he spent among the members of the City Rifles. The health of Sergeant Major Whitwell was then drank with three times three, also the healths of Captain Bunny, ex-Captain Wix, SergeantMajor Alborough, and "the other companies," the latter being responded to by Lieutenant Simpson, of the Naval Brigade, and Gunner Topliss, of the Artillery. During the evening several capital songs were sung by the members of the company, and the meeting was brought to a close at half-past nine, after singing the National Anthem. A ccriocs accident occurred last night to a young man named Thomson, who was assisting to hold the jumping sheet when the members of the Fire Brigade were practising throwing themselves off a ladder set up against Mr M'Gee's Hotel. One of these leaped from a considerable height, and the jar caused by his landing in the sheet was so great as to break Thomson's arm. He at once went to Dr. Farrelle's surgery, which is close by, and had the broken bone set. Tiie Volunteer movement, we nnderstand, is being taken up with great enthusiasm in the Waimea district, a crowded meeting having been held last night at the Spring Grove Hotel, when George Lightband Esq. J.P., was voted to the chair, who, in explaining the object of the meeting, pointed out very forcibly the benefits to be derived from volunteering, more especially in the country districts. Mr J, Mclnto3h having been elected Secretary pro tern, the names of those wishing to enrol themselves, amounting in all to nearly 50, were taken down. A committee was appointed consisting of the following gentlemen :— Messrs W. Barnes, II Hall, G. Lightband, T. Neal, T. Newth, G. Silcock, E. Paimer, and the Secretary A vote of thanks to the Chairman brought the proceedings to a close. The Committee held a meeting afterwards, at which the following resolution was passed :—" That as a number were UGable to be present at the meeting, the list will be kept over until Monday night next to give those wishing to join an opportunity of doing so." It will be necessary for those desirous of enrolling to send in their names without delay.
