EDUCATION BOARD.
Thursday, Mat 1. Present: Messrs Barnicoat (chairman), Waatney, Rout, Malcolm, Sbephard, Campbelt, Jackson, Dencker, and the Bishop of Nelson. Minutes of laat meeting read and confirmed. Report of Works and Finance Committee read, the following recommendations being adopted : — That Mr Scott's aroonnt nf-y oo n^-j.^- w a competent builder for bis opinion thereon, Mr Scott consenting to such reference. — That jE4 be granted to the Foxhill Committee, to enable them to repair the school-room temporarily pending the erection of a new school in the spring.— That £4 be allowed to the Motupipi Committee for a pump.— That £8 additional be allowed for painting at Motueka. — That Mr Jas. Robertson's tender of £314 for additions to Stoke school (the only tender) be accepted.— That the tender for building school at Collingwood, £ 487, be not accepted, as being too high.— That the tender of Parker Bros, for building school-house at Riwaka, £377 12s (the lowest tender), be accepted.— That Mr John Scott be authorised to inspect the school buildings at Stoke Brightwater, and Riwaka— That the building of a master's house at Riwaka be deferred. Resolved, That the Chairman of the Lower Moutere Committee, with Mr Dencker and the Inspector, be requested to confer on the spot at Lower Moutere as to the best mode of improving the house-accommodation. Resolved, That in consequence of the Upper Moatere Committee having complained of the quality of the shingles put on the teacher's house at Sarau, the Architect's attention be directed to the matter. The papera of the only two candidates for the assistant teachership at Charleston being unsatisfactory, the Secretary was instructed to advertise again for an assistant. Resolved, That the names of the qualified applicants for the uiistresship of Hillside School be forwarded to the Suburban North Committee with an intimation that the Board of Examiners consider Miss Alborough the most eligible candidate. Resolved, That Mias Leach be appointed assistant at the 3rd division Hardy-street school, on the recommendation of the Town Committee. ReaoLved, That Miaa Rose be appointed 3rd assistant at Toi-Toi Valley. Resolved, That Miss Pioney be appointed 2nd assistant at Motueka. Resolved, That Miss Earily Guy be appointed assistant at Riwaka. Resolved, That Miss Naldane be appointed mistress of Long Plain school, (the Committees having been previously consulted in each of the foregoing cases). Resolved, That Miaa Sunley;, junior, be continued as 2nd assistant at Hampden-street until June, but that she be expected to present herself for examination during that month. Resolved, That the question of the Secretary's department be postponed for another month. • Resolved, That £4 be allowed to the Town Committee to defray cost of book case at Tasman-street school. Resolved, That in distributing the Government subsidy to the several Public Libraries, the Secretary inform the Secretaries of Libraries that, in the opinion of the Board, the whole of the grant ought te be expended in the purchase of books. Resolved, That in reply to a letter from Mr Munro, complaining that his son had again been refused re-admission to Westport School, Mr Munro be informed that the Board mu3t leave him to bis legal remedy. Resolved, after a division, That the Westport Committee be informed that the Board contemplate giving Mr Brown three month*' notice of dismissal, at iheir next meeting i une^- Aye9 » s: 818h °P of Nelson, Messrs Dencker, Rout, Wastney, Malcolm. The report of the Commission sent to enquire about making provision for education at Matekitaki having been heard, it was resolved, That a school district, to be called the District of Central Buller, beproclaimed, and that Mr Stephen Oxuam's offer of a site at the west end of his property be accepted.
Resolved, That £5 be allowed for water closet at Pangatotara. Resolved, That School Committees be requested to make arrangements with teacher? for the examination of schools on (Saturdays by the Inspector, after due notice has been given by him of his intention to examine. Resolved, In reply to an application for assistance* from the inhabitants of Stanley Brook; that the Secretary be instructed to ascertain frotn the applicants whether they are prepared to convey the land and building to the Board en condition of the Board's completing the latter. MrWastney gave notice that he would move that teachers of subsidised schools in future be paid at the rate of £4 5s for each scholar, with boots free, instead of £3 10s. The Inspector wds authorised td examine Westport candidates for a scholarship in May, on his visit to the West Coast. The Secretary was instructed to forward to the Lower Wakeneld Committee a copy of a letter from the Board's solicitors, referring to a query put by the Lower Wakefield Committee. Resolved, That an extension of time for three weeks be given to the contractor for Hope school. Mr Dencker gave notice of motion that £7 be allowed for clearing away gorse, fencing, and gravelling at Upper Moutere. Permission was given to the Upper Moutere Committee to alter the position of the school chimney at Neudorf . The Inspector was instructed to make further enquiry when at Westport as to .temporary school accommodation at Waimaagaroa.
