fPBBSS AGEMOT.I Wellington, Friday. It is stated that it is intended to establish a chair in the New Zealand University for instruction in mining, engineering, and surveying, and that certificates of competency will be granted by that body in those branches of science. It is said that Keals will probably be proceeded against for attempted suicide. Mr Everiss, lately head master of the Mount Cook School, advertises that he will open a day school, "in which great prominence will be given to Bible reading." It will be supported entirely by voluntary contributions. It is said that already about £10,000 has been spent in attempts to float the Hydrabad. She will shortly be sold by the underwriters. > Frank Guinness is gazetted R.M. for Ashburton and Geraldine with jurisdiction to £100: and Alexander Le Grand Capmbell R.M. for the district of Col ling wood with jurisdiction to £50, and to be Warden of all the Warden's Courts in the Golden Bay goldfields district. The Associated Insurance Agents decline to make further payments to the Fire Brigades, on the ground that when making certain payments some time ago they did so on the understanding that they were not to be asked for any more during that year. The City Council will give the Brigades £75 to aid in purchasing uniforms. Any further sum required will probably be supplied by the public. After a good deal of discussion the motion to get the Banks to tender for the City Bank Account was withdrawn.! The revenue collected at the Port of Wellington last month was £16,432, and for the corresponding month of last year £13,661. The Drapers and Clothiers' Association have decided to draw up petition lists, requesting the public to discountenance shopping after six o'clock on Saturdays. The lists will be left at the principal establishments in the city. Noabuawahia, Friday. Sir G. Grey and party left in the Delta for Alexandra this morning. She will arrive there about three, and they will then proceed to Kopua in canoes. Auckland, Thursday. Sir George Grey turned the first sod of the Thames and Waikato Railway at Ham ilton to-day, and received a congratulatory address referring to the event as auspicious of peace and progress, and of the final termination of Maori alarms. He returned to Ngarnawahia with Mr Sheehan, and took the steamer for the Native meeting. Friday. At a stormy meeting of the Grammar School Governors, a series of resolutions, moved by Judge Heale, and supported by Judge Fenton and Mr O'Rorke, were carried, to the effect that the proper function of the endowed Grammar School is to furnish higher education than that attainable ,in the common schools*, that teaching young children elementary branches is contrary to the school trust, and injurious to secondary education; that the Grammar School course should commence at the highest point which the common school pupils can attain, and the school ought to be open by means of scholar- __ Dunedin, Friday. The premises of Mr Aikman, of Broad Bay, were burned down on Tuesday evening. Tbe house and furniture were insured in the National Office for £700. The fire was caused by some clothing having caught fire. Twenty-seven School Committees in Otago have passed a resolution in favor of Bible reading in State Schools. . . . Oamaru, Friday. Arrived— Barque Prospector, from Newcastle, with timber. She experienced heavy weather, and had to throw her deck cargo overboard. Wheat, 3s 4d to 3s 6d; oats, 2s to 2s 2d; barley, 6s, shows downward tendency ; flour £8 10s to £9 10s; pollard, £5; bran, £3 15s' potatoes, £4. Allf.o.b.
