At the sitting of the District Court to-day William Steward, 67 years of age, pleaded guilty to an indictment for breaking and entering a dwelling with intent to commit f elony> and for simple larceny. He was sentenced to twelve months for each offence, to run concurrently. Wangantji, Thursday. G. B. Morgan's trial lasted all day, and at midnight the jury brought in a verdict of gailty of forgery, and guilty of uttering without intent to defraud. The prisoner said he could not understand the verdict but admitted that he had had an impartial trial, and said that if he had been at liberty since his committal he would have been able to procure exonerating evidence. He trusted to public opinion arriving at different results than the jury, and threw himself on the mercy of the Court. Judge Richmond in paseing sentence said he would take into account that in all probability the prisoner did not intend to defraud to the full amount, but had merely dabbled in crime. He sentenced him to two years' imprisonment with hard labour. A fatal accident occurred to a sawyer named Thomas Michell, recently from Hokitika, while cross cutting a log in the bush a few miles from town. The log rolled over and crushed him to death.
