THE "CONSPIRACY " AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT.

The following letter, enclosing telegrams, has bseu sent by Mr Hall to the Christchurch Press ;— '• Sir— l have hitherto abstained from taking any publtc notioa of tbe exoitement that baa been got up aboot a telegram seat to trie by the Hon Mr Waterhouse, and my telegram in reply. Io the first instance I looked upon the importance given to it aa a mere joke, aod since tbe matter has. assumed a more serious aspect I have felt obliged to keep silence until I could communicate with Mr Waterhouse aud obtain his sanction to tbe publication of bis message to me. Having obtained this I now request you to publish the telegrams, from wbich it will be seen thut tbe whoie story of Mr Waterhouse having suggested to me tbe materials oat of wbich a Ministry could ba formed to supplant Sir George Grey's Government, and of my havjng proposed an/ altered list of names for the same purpose, is a complete fabrication from beginning to end. The signature, to; Mr Waterbouse's telegram was which I, perhaps, hastily, mistook for Whitmore. In print the two words bear but little resemblance, but in the hurried writing of the.;sejegrepu. clerk Wui(eb6use may be made to look atflrtt eight ljke Whitmore, and in this ins tan cc it was so; hence my mistake io sending to Colonel Whitmore a reply to the telegram sent to me^ as iti afterwards turned out, by Mr Waterhouse.— Your obedient eervant, John, Ham." [Copy op Tblbgbams.] ".Hon. J. Hall, ; Cbristeburch— Ministerial crisis seems impending. Grey persistently refuses to sanation Luckie's. Oiher Ministers unanimously insist upon it, their honor being involved. Little probability bf compromise. Opinion prevails that Grey wishes to compel hia colleagues resign, as to form Ministry entirely responsible to himself.— G. H. Whitehotjse." "Hoo. Colonel Whitmore, Wellington.—(Private.) — Thanks for your telegram just receive.. Concur as to Grey's object. Confident euch Ministry would not be supported either by House or country. Stevens concurs. J Hall.
