Auckland, Thursday. Wm. Crossley, son of aclergymau, charged with stealing a lady's cloak, said he had drunk hard all the week. The prisoner was also convicted of stealing a pair of trousers and a waistcoat, and was sentenced to three monthß hard labor on each offence. A young man from San Francisco, who laid long odds at the recent races, gave valueless cheques to the bookmakers for hia losses to the amount of £370, and then bolted. One of the bookmakers pursued him and compelled him to give up a diamond ring and other jewellery worth £90. At the Bank of New Zealand meeting held to-day, the usual dividend and bonus of 15 per cent were declared. £25,000 will be carried to the reserve fund, and £9700 carried forward. The report shows a cash and coin balance at the bankers of £1,700 000 of which £769,0c0 is held in the colony, and the balance in London. The profit and loss account was as follows:— Profit at March 31 after making very full appropriations for every bad or doubtful debt depending, £88,250, to which is added the balance of undivided profit, 30th September, 1879, £888, making the total available £89,128 11s Bd. This, it is recommended, should be appro^ priated as follows:— Payment of dividend at the rate of ten per cent per annum, £36,360; bonus of 5s per share, equal to 5 per cent per annum. It is proposed to increase the reserve fund €25,000. The balance to be earned to the profit and loss new account is £9753. The report was adopted. The Chairman remarked on the disastrous consequences of the ( ity of Glasgow Bank failure but said the reports of this Bank's losses by such failure were quite untrue, as not a shilling was lost. The private deposits had increased to £198,000, and the profit brought to account was about the same as last year but a larger provision had been made for future contingencies.
