The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, APRIL 5, 1879.

An inquiry was held yesterday afternoon at the Lunatic Asylum before E. Pollock and A. Greenfield Eaqs., J.J.P., on an information laid by the medical officer against one of the warders named Galland, for striking a patient. He was fiued £2 and costs. The privileges in connection with the forthcoming Easter encampment were sold at auction to-day by Mr Mabiu, when the canteen was disposed of to Mr O'Brien of the Provincial Hotel for £26, and the refreshment booth to Mr Burrell for £12, 10s. A Blenheim paper says that Mr Henry Redwood has been invited to act as one of the judges of horses at the next Victorian Agricultural Show, and also at the Sydney International Exhibition. Dr Selwyn, Bishop of Melanesia, states the Pall Mall Gazette, will return to his diocese at the end of next May. The Canterbury Acclimatisation Society announces that, though the pheasants in that district have bred very successfully, there will not be a large number of birds when the open season comes, as the early broods have been almost exterminated through the scarcity of food caused by the long drought. The G. li. Argus gives the following particulars of the accident by which Mr William Pitt lost his life on Sunday last:— The Kuinara coach, driven by " Old Alick " with its passengers had crossed the main body of the Arahura River in safety, but on reaching the south side it was found that the river had flooded a bye-wash which ia usually dry. The coach was driven into this, and in attempting to cross it stuck against a log, and remained immovable. After some delay the passengers proposed to cross with the horses, the first to cross being Mrs Evans and another. Mr Pitt and Mr Kerr then rode in together, and Mr Pitt's horse stumbled, throwing him, Mr Kerr crossing in safety. Mr Pitt was then seen to attempt to ford the by-wash, and got nearly across when he was swept off his feet. A rope was then thrown to him by the other passengers, but he missed it, and was swept down.
