The Post has reason lo believe that there was a most cordial interview between the Governor and the Premier on lhe return of the latter from Auckland, and that before Sir G. Grey left Wellington he indited a letter to the Governor expressing his regret at being unable to welcome him personally. The new Magiitrate to be appointed is to be a lawyer by profession, and the salary will be £500 or X550. Mr Wood is spoken of as likely to get the appointment. The N.Z.S.S. Company will withdraw their steamers from Bale owing to the present tightness of the money market. The steamer Taupo is in the same position as when she grounded first, the contract to i float her having been given up.
Governor Robinson and a smell private party will visit Wairarapa to-day by special train, and will spend a few days 'shooting there next week. Lady Robinson's reception was largely attended by both ladies and gentlemen. The stringency of the money market hfere still continues to be very much felt in business circleß. It is stated that during the past day or two an eminent mercantile firm here waa desirous of getting au advance of £30,000 and offered securities to the amount of .£BO,OOO, and it was only after considerable trouble that the accommodation was ob tuincd. At a meeting of Mr Duncan's creditors today, it was disclosed that the liabilities amounted to £20,000, and the assets to £14,000. The assets are secured to several creditors, while for the other creditors nothing is available. Mr Duucan has made a final assignment of the estate. 0 amaru, Saturday. The grain market is now active, and wheat is freely purchased from 3s to 3s 4d, with an upward tendency; Oats are dull of sale at 2s to 2s 3d ; barley is eagerly bought up at 4s to 4s 6d, but is very scarce and is expected to rise; flour, £8 10s to £9; oatmeal, £18; potatoes, £3; oaten hay, £4; straw, £2; bran, £4, pollard, £5. Bluff, Saturday. The Dolly Varden reports that the cutter Sarah Jane is supposed to have foundered in the Straits yesterday when coming over with oysters. The crew were named Charles Anderson, Henry Scanlan, and Thomas Sowmers. Masterton, Saturday. Mr Waterhouse, who has gone to Napier, has bought a station there for £33,000, which carries as many sheep as the Wangaroa run, which he recently sold at nearly three times that amount. Blenheim, Saturday. Mr Seymour, M.H 11., addressed his constituents at the Wairau last night. He reviewed the history of the session, and characterised the career of the Government as one of promises broken, measures dropned, and hopes deferred. He considered the fand tax and the tax on lessees of Crown lands as unfair. Hospitals and charitable aid had been sadly neglected by the present Government. He received a vote of thanks for his address and action in Parliament. Auckland, Saturday. The Kaitangata relief fund exceeds £900, and is expected to exceed £1000 at the final meeting on Wednesday next. The German residents intend giving a ball to the officers of the German war-ship now here. Christchdkch, Saturday. J. Johnston, bootmaker, was to-day committed for trial for fraudulently concealing goods at the time of his bankruptcy. He had hidden away £50 worth of boots. Bail was allowed, two sureties in £100 each, and himself in £100. 'Hokitika, Saturday. Mr Pitt's body was found on Thursday afternoon in Canoe Creek, twenty miles north of Greymouth, and forty from where the accident occurred. Ha will be buried tomorrow with Masonic honors. The Jackson's Bay Commission is still sitting.
