ANOTHER FIRE.

Christchurch, Friday. An extensive fire occurred early this morning in High-st. It is supposed to have broken out in tbe premises of Gillespie and Co.'s Chicory Works, thence extending to the adjacent sawmill owned by Langdown and Co. The fire must have been smouldering for some considerable time as two men named Goodman and Calder smelt fire on coming home to their bouse next door at about half-past one o'clock and tried to discover it, but failed to do so. The fire was first discovered at about three o'clock, when the alarm was given, but the Gillespies premises and the sawmill were in flames before the Fire Brigades were on the scene, and they could not be Bayed as the fire had obtained a firm hold, but it was prevented from spreading. The following are the insurances': — Langdown's mill, in the New Zealand £1600, half of which had been transferred to the South British; stock £300, store and kiln £130, and another store and shed £120.
