CITY COUNCIL.

The ordinary f ortDightly meeting was held last night. Present, all the members. The following correspondence were read: letter to the Resident Engineer complaining of the narrowing of the road by the railway near Mr Lukins' ; to the Under Secretary for Public Works calling attention to the necessity for repairiog the boat landing ; to Mr O'Malley, requesting him to clear out the water tables on the Port Road ; from Mr Rout, asking to be refunded the additional cost of valuing the land recently brought within the City boundary ; from Mr Payne, asking that as be had cemented half the footpath in front of his premises, the Council should do the other half. Refused ; from Mr Kobertson, asking that the footpath in front of his premises be gravelled. Agreed to. The Financial Committee's showed that the overdraft on the Ist April next would be £!800, and that the gross expenditure for the coming year iucluding the payment of this amount, would be £508!, which would be met within £&G by the shilling rate up the town property, valued at £54,630, and other receipts during the year. The Public Works Committee recommended that all the Corporation employees should be allowed a holiday whenever proclaimed by the Mayor. Agreed to. That the recently formed road from the Pilot Station to the Commercial Wharf be gravelled. Agreed to. That the street lamps be lighted every evening, those in the centre of ihe town to be extinguished at three a.m., and those in the outskirts at midnight. On the motion of Cr. Crewdson it was resolved that the Surveyor b.e instructed to have the lamps lighted whenever it was necessary. It was resolved that Mr Mabin be instructed to put up to auction the lease for 14 years of the Cattle Market Reserve. A petition of the inhabitants of Bridgestreet that a drain be laid down from opposite the Government Buildings to connect with the Collingwood street sewer was agreed to, on condition that the petitioners agreed to connect their premises with the drain. It was resolved on the motion of the Mayor to make the following alterations in the schedule of the works, for which a loan is proposed to be raised:— To construct a sewer from the top of Collingwood-street to Bridgestreet instead of continuing it to Halifaxstreet, and to road in Trafalgar-street south instead of the extra work previously proposed.
