Lord Norinanby made his first public, appearance on the race-course on Thursday, and was cheered on his arrival. He has already a long programme to fulfil, and will visit some of the up-country townships shortly. The bookmakers lost considerably at the last meeting, the racing being all in faVor of the well backed favorites. The owner of the Ascot Stakes, the Hon. W. St. Clair is said to have Won £15,000, he having taken 15 to 1 in thousands juat before the race. Mr Lang s splendid picture of Esther in the National Gallery is attracting much attention. Some stiles of Valuable horse stock took place last week. The imported horse Tim Whiffler went for 400 guineas ; the brood mare Housemaid, well pedigreed, fetched 825 guineas; and aome promising youngsters 100 each. At Lingley's sale the average price of colts was 96 guineas, and for fillies 58J guineas. The Lysters have returned from England with an opera company, and will open shortly. r Business has very slightly improved, but until achange in weather and greater confidence is established, the depression will not be removed. The Kellys keep well out of sight. The police believe they are again in Victoria, The Government of Queensland sent down 25 black trackers under experienced officers.
