[PBESS AOBNCY.I Weixitgtox, Monday night. Mr G. E. Barton, M.H.R., has left for San Francisco. He has not taken his family, and expects to return in time for the session of Parliament. Mr Thomas Young, interpreter in the House of Representatives, is the first appointment of a new batch of National and Court Judges. Mr C. W. Schultz, chairman of the Tramway Company, and a very old and well-known Wellington settler, was found dead on his own premises early this morning. Heart disease was -the cause of death. The legality of payment to City Councillors for sitting on the Wharf Committee is to be tested in the R.M. Court. The steamer City of New York with the London mails of the 30th June, left San Francisco for New York on the 18th Feb., one day late. A cheque for £21,000 as legacy duty in the late Captain Rhodes' estate has been paid in by the trustees, and another £1000 is to be paid this month. Sir George Grey, it is understood, will at once proceed to the Maori Parliament at Orakei. Port Chalmebs, Monday. At the Police Court this morning J.Lamb, Becocd engineer of the Zamboanga, and his Chinese servant were fined £25 each for Bmagging cigars. Hokitika, Monday. The Government steamer Stella arrived yesterday with the Jackson's Bay Commissioners. At a preliminary meeting today they decided to commence proceedings to-morrow at three o'clock in Hokitika. There are a good many witnesses to give «yidence bere.

Greytowx, Tuesday. Another most destructive fire broke out at Masterton about 2 o'clock this morning, destroying a large block of valuable buildings, including the newly erected Bank of Australasia, Williams and Cameron, saddlers; Wilton, seedsman ; a boarding house and other business places. Further particulars are not yet to hand. The telegraph line is down. The Fire Brigade worked splendidly, and stayed the progress of the fire.
